He's not playing well at present but he will get his form back.I think alot of the World Cup players seem to have returned off form or someway jaded. Just don't seem to be playing to their own high standards. Doesn't mean that they are crap players, maybe just still recovering after the World Cup. Maybe it's not a physical rest they need - but the Spanish seemed to be really gutted when they went out of the WC that time. I'd rest Xavi for a game or two and let Momo and Stevie play in the centre. Both SG and MS are playing well, and it will afford Pennant some game time on the wing as well as allow Xavi a little rest so he can return in a few weeks back to the form we all know and enjoy. That is the reason we have the big squad - when players are off form, give them a rest...

rikf Posted September 9, 2006 Posted September 9, 2006 Why would we want to rest a Barcelona player? our player is called Xabi

First time I have ever thought he was a bit of a s***house, Cahill bullied him from start to finish and he didn't have a go back. Its not good enough. Short of digging cahill there wasn't much he could do about him. Dirty barstad was playing to his own rules there yesterday and Poll seemed made up to let some of the madder stuff like the headlock go.
anny road Posted September 10, 2006 Posted September 10, 2006 I agree with Elisha here He spent too much time talking to the ref and he let Cahill get to him It reminded me of McMahon against Jones in the 88 final Xabi has not come back from the world cup

Alonso is playing awful, Garcia is worse than Garcia and Reina looks as shaky as Dudek ever was. You cannot carry passengers and Alonso and Garcia are in the back seat of mini-bus and Reina I believe is not giving the defence any confidence.

I think we have to give Xabi a bit of a break, no one was calling him names when he run the Anfield derby last season, they were always going to try to rough him up a bit yesterday. its easy to give the spainish lads a going over but the local lads were as bad if not worse. I thought Stevie and Carra were shocking yesterday and they deserve as much flack as anyone.

And Steve is not a right sided midfielder, we bought Pennant for that position, f***in play him there. The whole team selection yesterday was wrong, no pace upfront. I agree that Sami is trying to cover Aurelio, highlighted superbly in the first half when they both went for the same ball on the touchline, but to me that was more Sami's fault than Aurelio's.

I definatly agree that the lack of pace let Everton play their closing down game a lot better and Rafa will know his mistake now but I am probably one of the few that believes that the position that Stevie plays for us is his best position, I don't think he is discaplined enough to play in the middle without 2 other central players to cover for him so as we are not going to play 3-5-2 Rafa has given him a role with a little less responsiblity and let him play a freeish role on the right. Rather than Pennents exclusion I think the bigger question is why our best defender this season was left out, Agger must feel very unlucky. I also think we have to be patient with Aurelio as with Riise's injury he will have to get used to english football quicker than is probably fair, he will have to be mentally strong to get through this phase and be a success at liverpool. Guest Kev Posted September 10, 2006 Posted September 10, 2006 I'm just not looking forward to the next week, PSV and Chelsea away - I think we are in for a very very rough and frustrating week.
Guest Paris 81 Posted September 10, 2006 Posted September 10, 2006 (edited) People having a go at Alonso for not being tougher, where the f*** was our captain marvel when things were getting a bit heated? He hit the post, apart from that he had his head up his a*** again and was playing within himself. Probably thinking about his next book signing. Edited September 10, 2006 by Paris 81

He would've been fine in the derby - not afraid to get stuck in.This sums up to me that this year's squad is not what it was built up to be. Zenden had a shocker against Sheffield United. What price a Didi Hamann to get hold of a game. Some bang out of form players, don't know what's happened to Alonso's passing, lack of fitness and/or confidence I would guess, but if the other option is Zenden then you can't drop him.
hideNseek Posted September 10, 2006 Posted September 10, 2006 None of our players look on form at the moment.
