Can anyone play Guitar?

[Case]

I am 43 years old ... never picked up a Guitar in anger, don't neccessarilly know what chords ARE, let alone how to play them - haven't the foggiest how to tune a guitar and have shortish, unflexible fingers....

 

Simple question ....

 

Is it possible, at my age and total lack of musical ability to ...

learn how to play an acoustic guitar to a reasonable standard ... By this I mean to be able to pick it up in front of a few friends and carry a tune.

 

All within say ... 12 months?

 

How do I start?

 

Or should I stick to the comb and bog roll?
