My gut reaction would be Rafa would go for Cally or Keegan: Fit, versatile, hard working team players

 

Shanks would have signed Gerrard, after all, who wouldn't?

The game now compared to then is so different it makes this a near impossible exercise. If you got them to hypothetically swap eras you may get an interesting set of possibilities cropping up.

 

Keegan, Hughes, Callaghan, Gerrard, Heighway, Thommo, Alonso, Sissoko, Reina, Riise and Kuyt I could see appealing to both should their times be reversed.

I wouldn't rule out Ray Kennedy and McDermott. Seems like Rafa type players to me.
