thought it was a decent result to be honest...

first premiership game of the season, away at a newly promoted side who of course are gonna be well up for it...

Not to mention the fact that within the first 30mins, we lose carra and riise...which meant a reshuffle, Hyypia moved across to center bk right, aurillo to left back...

Yet other than the goal, we were not really troubled at the back, Agger was a major plus, Aurillo looked good(apart from the goal where he lost his man, but that will come with learning our system...)

Sissoko and zenden were fairly quiet, gerrard did ok, fowler and bellamy worked quite well, Gonzalez got better as the game went on...

only real poor player for me was krompkamp who looks on a different wave-ength to the rest of the side..

1-1 away from home, 2 injuries, players rested for the midweek champs league game..

Good result as far as im concerned.

Haven't seen any of the game, I'm just really disappointed that we didn't get 3 points - I was hoping that we'd get off to a flier and not drop points against s*** teams this season.

We were pretty poor but it's not the end of the world. It was a difficult game - an early kick-off (f*cking hate them) against a newly promoted side. The injuries really limited our options - both Crouch and Pennant would definitely been brought on otherwise. We were worth a point, and I remain confident.

more than 2/3 of the match with 3/4 of our back line from our 2nd string in their first match of the season i think we were alright... we're still finding our feet

2 points dropped all the same. I know these early games can be dodgy especially against promoted teams intent on kicking everything that moves but I'm convinced Sheff Utd will be relegated come the end of the season so it's hard to see it any other way.

Long long way to go though.

i'd add zenden to the poor players. his distribution was woeful.

shouldn't really single out indivduals as the majority of the team were below par.

Bolo wasn't really at the races today...got over-ran a bit and Momo was too thinly stretched with Alonso missing. Gonxalez, Aurelio and Agger all showed good things are coming while Bellamy showed he'll be a menace once he reads our midfield and vice versa. Robbie looked a bit of it, but then he's had a knee injury so give him time. For me, the hardest working and most 'I'm not happy with a draw' player was Jan Kromkamp. He played his part so well that although we badly missed Riise and Carragher at times, I barely noticed Finnan wasn't there.

Remember chaps, today we were without:

Alonso

Finnan

Garcia

Crouch

Kuyt

Pennant (barring a few minutes)

and Riise and Carragher for most of the game.

To shove them back to within twenty yards of their goal for the bulk of the second half with what in effect is our reserves in the main, shows just how strong we are and continue to become.

Totally agree with Fyds, i mean we had only 1 regular defensive player playing after the 20min when Riise and Carra went off.

opening day, away point, tricky place to go, lot of new players bedding in, we can play a sh*tload better than that and we will. no cause for panic or knee-jerking at all.

Agreed.

If we are going to win the league its going to be a very close-run thing and we have just dropped 2 easy points there.

Sheffield Utd were ordinary - hard-working and organised but no real quality. I'll be surprised if Chelsea don't win at a canter when they play them.

But they could also conceivably drop points at places where we'll win also. We wont know the significance of the result till May so there's no point in speculating really. It was a poor performance and 2 points dropped but not the end of the world. As soon as I saw we had Sheff Utd away first game of the season I thought we'd struggle. We got exactly what I expected yesterday

One of those frustrating games that you get sometimes, usually at the start of the campaign. Take a point cos without that penalty we could have quite easily lost that game yesterday. Too many key players disjointed and not playing as we know they can.

Hyypia's long punts to no one, Gerrard not involved enough on the ball out wide and head dropped on occasions, Kromkamp (say no more) plus the central midfield of Zenden and Sissoko struggling to acertain any dominance or composure on the game.

Plus points for me were Fabio and Gonzalez though they both had decent games.

All in all it was a point gained.

see nothings changed on here then :D

not seen ANY of the game so cannot comment on the performance

however, with losing two players to injury (plus Finnan), agaisnt a newly promoted team on the 1st game of the season, a point is no disaster

Gotta give credit to Sheff U as well, they were up for a battle from the off and defended great. Morgan was a star at the back for them.. the C*nt ;)

Winning the games we should be winning removes any element of doubt. Every point dropped against the lower teams means more when we play Utd, Chelsea and Arsenal.

Nobody is saying it's a disaster they are saying it's disapointing but it seems they aren't allowed to say that either and newly promoted teams are being credited with superhuman abilities in order to make a draw look like a good result.

It was a poor performance, a poor result and we were saved by a dubious pen. We dropped 2 points but their is a long way to go in the season so we have to look forward.

Why have promoted teams suddenly been promoted to demi-god status?

dont think they have but they may be easier to play against a few weeks into the season after a defeat or two and they've had a bit of their confidence knocked out of them.

FWIW i thought

1. The team selection was wrong yesterday - looks like priority was given to Tuesday when, for me, it should have been given to the League game. We need a draw on Tuesday and could really have done with 3pts yesterday.

2. Having said that - the players that went out there yesterday should have been good enough to beat that Sheffield Utd team anbd had we shown the committment that we did for the 15 minutes prior to the equaliser for the entire 90 i think we would have.

3. We can't blame any injuries when we spend the previous week talking about how Rafa's has assembled the best squad ever

4. The injuries only impacted Rafa's ability to make attacking tactical substitutions cos the defence was pretty sound throughout.

5. Never a penalty for me, i would have (and i know this forum would have) been livid if that had been given against us.

6. A point is better than none.

7. nope couldn't think of one.

Link? Or is that another line you throw in if anyone tries to say anything remotely positive regarding yesterday?

Dont think they have have they?

That said they are by far tougher to play in the first game of the season see Wigan last season, Fulham at Old Trafford a few years back, Watford should of won yesterday at a tough place, Reading won. That said, we should of done what Chelsea done to Wigan and Utd done to Fulham that time and sneaked a narrow win.

Take your pick from numerous posts on here and elsewhere saying it was a good point or a point gained.

I'll ask again. Where are the posts saying they've got super human abilities? Or any posts calling them a top quality team will do, just to make it easier for you.

Did I imply that superhuman ability was a quote, I do apologise.

I was under the impression that it was simply implied by people saying that due to injuries we were lucky to gain a point, quick scan of the posts show's I'm not on my own either.

Chelsea/Mancs away is a point gained, Sheff Utd away is two points dropped first game of the season or not.

So you cant find any posts then?

Thought so. In future maybe you should pedal your negative s**** (Going against the positive opinion, whatever you want to call it) with stuff you can back up?

What are you banging on about exactly?

I thought I'd made it quite clear yet you seem to be struggling with the whole concept.

PS: What exactly have I been negative about, the fact that it was a poor performance or that it was a poor result, positive or negative it's correct. I also said it's early in the season and we've plenty of time yet that's rushed past you.
