They played really well, the best Ive seen them play in a long time. Steven Davies - what a performance. MON will groom him into a great young player

Surprised he took the job tbh. I thought he deserved a better team.

he strikes me as the kind of character that relishes rolling his sleeves up at an underachieving club like villa. he mightn't manage to get them a trophy or into europe in a hurry, but he'll make them hard to beat and more of a threat going forward.

He can't really fail at Villa. Like Newcastle, they're a better team than they've shown in recent years but unlike the barcodes they've been crying out for a manager/chairman combination with even a sliver of class.

If he does his job even remotely competently, the fans will adore him. It was a pretty safe choice on his part.

and an ideal way to get himself back on the radar for the Man Utd job. After 2 years out of football turning a bunch of losers into a half decent side and possibly more if this Learner fella comes in with a few bob can only enhance his already outstanding reputation in football.

You know what, in hindsight, he wouldn't have been as bad a choice of manager as I'd thought .....

I have a feeling he knew a takeover and infusion of cash for players was on the Horizon.

Martin O'Neill + Money to spend = A Top Team.

Was talking to Will about this in Cardiff - as I've never quite understood myself why I wouldn't want him at Liverpool..

Then at last - I realised what it was - he's an excellent manager - and in many ways would benefit the club - but in other ways - he's very much a Souness - I think that he has that arrogance about him that would mean he would have no problem riding roughshod over the traditions and history of the club in any way he thought was best to achieve success.

I suppose some people might not have a problem with that - but I would - for me Rafa is approaching the managing of the club in a way that takes note of and respects the history and the fans and the 'way of doing things'

Probably not laid that out as clearly as I could of - but major alarm bells went off when O'Neill seemed to be 'in the frame' for taking over at the club - he might have made us more successful - but we wouldn't be the Liverpool we are now..

Some good quotes from him below:

* "I've not had to ask permission from Geraldine [his cancer-suffering wife] to take the job. I'm one of the few men in this life who are not under the thumb. I'm stronger than that. Did she want me out of the house? Listen, she's wanted me out of the house for the past 27 years and has often asked me not to come back again. But I always show up, and really, she can't do without me, because I'm brilliant" - O'Neill

* "I'm already concerned, just knowing the history of those two managers. When we go out of that door, I'll be walking backwards down the corridor" - O'Neill considers his future after Villa chairman Doug Ellis greeted his arrival by comparing it to those of Tommy Docherty and Ron Atkinson.

* "Am I worried about taking the job? I'm petrified" - O'Neill.

you know what Andy yer loon, I was gonna dig this thread out earlier, to announce my surprise that you hadn't :lol:

What villa need is new players, they are really chit right now, no wins in 9 games. They just have a really mediocre squad. Barry, Mellberg, Davis, Sorrensen, Agbonlahor is a good prospect, and that is about as good as it gets there. Baros has been crap, Angel is hit and miss. Petrov looks like a waste of time so far.

They need about 10 new players.
