Kiev is located in what was the center, and was the largest city, of the Kievan Rus civilization which was the earliest Slavic state, which eventually spawned Ukraine, Russia, and Belarus. So in a sense Kiev is "The Mother of the Russian Cities."

Glad I could impress. Over the years I've found that a degree in history is pretty much the most useless way to spend four years of a persons life, and if I get a chance to show it off then by God I'm going to take it.
