I really can't see him and Carrick making a top midfield, there's little to no creativity with those two. They'll work hard.

Is Ferguson putting everything on Scholes and Rooney to create chances?

Been wondering for a while now why the mancs don't make a move for him, he's the type of player they need in there even if he's maybe just short of the quality.

Breaking news on the BBC site.

Homeless mans Alonso and Sissoko. I'd be happy with that. I was worried they'd get Gattuso, Mascherano or something this Summer.

Not really sure him and Carrick would compliment each other too well. I'd say they'd be closer in style to Didi and Xabi rather than Momo and Xabi.

Obviously not as good as any of the players mentioned though.

He's better than what they have and would improve them = a bad thing.

they'd morror alonso and sissoko.

Hargreaves was f*cking great in the WC. Hope he doesn't bring that form with him.

Disagree, Hargreaves doesn't go on lung bursting runs around the pitch too often. He's a good tackling midfielder but generally sits in front of the back four.

Is he better than Scholes though? For the overall impact he'd have on the team?

For my money I'd rather face a midfield of Carrick and Hargreaves than a midfield of Carrick and Scholes.

Actually don't like that basic argument tbh. Practically every player they sign you could say the same of, until you see them in the team. For example, Djemba-Djemba, better player than Stewart who they had in midfield at the time = improvement in their squad = bad thing.

We have to accept they will sign more players and they are signing them with a view to improving their team. Just doesn't always work out that way.

dunno if he's better than Scholes but he's a better CM than Fletcher, O'Shea, Giggs, Park et al for my money.

has to improve them if he goes there.

He's different from Scholes, so that's a bit daft. Hargreaves in front of the back four with Scholes and Carrick in the centre, inside two wider players.

I STILL don't know what Hargreaves has to do to be rated by you lot. Is it because he's not on Sky every week?

He's versatile, works hard, has a great engine, plays the ball very simply and has been part of the England set up (albeit one trying to accommodate Beckham, Gerrard and Lampard) and the Bayern TEAM for the better part of 4 years. I think he and Carrick would be pretty decent as a pairing. Carrick further forwards and Hargreaves as a mix of Didi/Xabi

If we didn't have Momo, I'd be really miffed to think of him going to one of our rivals.

If they sign him that'll be Scholes, Hargreaves and Carrick into a midfield that was utterly s**** last season.

He definitely does not 'sit' in front of the back four. If anything when playing in that role for England he was too eager to step away and try to break up play outside of the 'didi/Makele' zone

And where do you think Carrick plays?

Yes he's a different player to Scholes but if you're going 4-5-1 then where does Rooney go? Don't think he has ever really worked as a lone striker has he?

Haven't really seen him for England, but he certainly sits for Bayern.

You could look at the 2nd post

Someone saying him and Carrick arent very creative? Whats wrong with that? Him and Carrick are both good players but are worse versions of what we've got in terms of defensive skills, work rate and creativeness. Not that everything has to be compared with us of course.

He'll probably improve them although i'd say after a Summer linking Utd with Pirlo, Gatusso, Riquelme, Diarra, Mascherano people wouldnt be to upset with them signing Carrick and Hargreaves.

You could also think back to previous threads we have had on Hargreaves (eg in the World Cup)

You could look at the 2nd post as an example of me not thinking he'll fit in with carrick, nothing to do with rating him, which I do.

As you said, without Momo.....

I take that point, but it's all relative really isn't it? I'd rather they signed a player that will improve their squad strength than someone who would improve their best 11.

sky sports news has just reported that bayern have issued a statement saying that hargreaves recently signed a three-year extension to his contract and will stay with them for the remainder of the four years left on it.

Think that's be a great move for United. It isn't as good as Sissoko and Alonso but I do think that Hargreaves and Carrick would compliment each other well.

I don't think Scholes can do it in a midfield two anymore. He certainly can't do it week in, week out. Buying Hargreaves releases Scholes to cover Rooney playing off a front man and gives them loads more options.

Hargreaves is high energy, can win the ball back high up the pitch. If we didn't have Mo I'd be saying he's the man we should go after. It gives them a strong squad in midfield because while Fletcher et al aren't good enough to start week in, week out, they are good enough to have as options over a long season. Last year's second place bears that out.

We've had enough bloody threads about Gerrard, Alonso and Sissoko not all starting every game together for people not to to assume Hargreaves, Carrick and Scholes would be. Haven't we?

Unlike Gerrard Scholes has a proven track record of playing well just off the front week in, week out.
