The Magpies are hoping for a hostile atmosphere for the visit of Paul Jewell's men and in an effort to recreate the scenes at Alan Shearer's testimonial will give a scarf to every spectator as they arrive at St James' Park.

Shepherd: 'When the fans at Alan's testimonial started waving the scarves it was one of those moments that made the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end. It was the talk of football and even now, people still bring it up in conversation.

'I hope the scarf waving will become a tradition at home games. When St James's Park is buzzing, there's no better ground in the world for atmosphere.

'That's why we have decided to start the new season by giving a black and white scarf to every Newcastle fan coming to the Wigan game. We want them to wave the scarves during the game and help Glenn Roeder and the team get off to a winning start.

'And the message is clear: We want the fans to bring the scarves to every game and help us keep St. James's as a fortress that no visiting team will fancy coming to.'

Was quite funny I remember reading a newcastle forum after that shearer game ,newcastle-online and there were people on there adament that they had made this scarf thing up

First time I've heard of it. Makes it sound like footballing folklore

Me too. Hate contrived sh*te like that, but that sums up Newcastle for me, they're just playing at being a big club, they'll never achieve it unless they fundamentally change their attitude and the way the club is run.

These so called 'scarves' will surely bring Newcastle their first honours in many years.

Scarves - who would have thought it? They have some incredible minds at Newcastle, 'The Toon Think Tank' must have spent many hours in their secret bunker formulating this plan...

File alongside 'European giants Chelsea'

I'm sure Shearer's testimonial had a good atmosphere but its hardly a European night against Juventus or a semi final against Chelsea is it ?

Taken from the Fiver yesterday:

QUOTE OF THE DAY

"When the fans at Alan Shearer's testimonial started waving the scarves, it was one of those moments that made the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end. It was the talk of football and even now, people still bring it up in conversation. I hope scarf-waving will become a tradition" Fat Freddy Shepherd intends to give every fan at St James' Park on Saturday a free club scarf, and ignore decades of Italian terrace culture while he's at it.

What a dick.
