Guest sp Posted August 15, 2006 Posted August 15, 2006 Hello all, long time lurker here. I'm a student and I'm doing a project on the Premier League. As part of the project I'm trying to put together how fans feel about the game. So my question to you is: Do you think the Premiership is becoming boring? Are you put off watching league games because of its perceived lack of competition, with the same top 4 every year? I'm posting this on all club fan sites to try to get a balanced view.
stressederic Posted August 15, 2006 Posted August 15, 2006 No I don't think its become boring, although thats a comment thats tinged with the optimism of the coming season. I think the start of last year was a bit surreal after the post-Istanbul hangover, but once that wore off the Premiership was as much fun as always.
Leo No.8 Posted August 15, 2006 Posted August 15, 2006 Far too optimistic to say anything but no at the moment, it isn't becoming too boring. Ask me again in November when Chelsea are 12 points clear, you may get a different answer...
Gilps Posted August 15, 2006 Posted August 15, 2006 No, but could well see why supporters of all but last season's top 4 or 5 would say yes.
Stevie H Posted August 15, 2006 Posted August 15, 2006 think there's a case to be made for its over-exposure making it a bit boring.
Andy @ Allerton Posted August 15, 2006 Posted August 15, 2006 People saying Watching Football matches is boring. You would have to be mental to do something you didn't like. If you find it boring - don't do it - do something you find interesting instead! Those people on Why Don't You had their heads screwed on!

MarkD Posted August 15, 2006 Posted August 15, 2006 Too much football on tv is boring, too much coverage of what players/managers/ex-players think is boring, too many books/exposes are boring, too much over-selling of an otherwise good league is boring. The premiership is not boring but what comes with is is.
sutty Posted August 15, 2006 Posted August 15, 2006 think there's a case to be made for its over-exposure making it a bit boring. Interesting point that one Steve When it was first on sly I watched every game. Bolton v Boro, Southampton v Leicester etc, I'd watch it. I had the sky sports subscription and prem plus season ticket. I turned in the prem plus thing last year and I hardly watch anything other than MotD or the "big" live games that might affect Liverpool.
Guest sp Posted August 15, 2006 Posted August 15, 2006 thanks for your replies, really appreciate your help. my project is analysing the Premier League busines model. One question I'm trying to answer is can the competitive balance be improved. Before that I need to answer is whether it needs changing, hence my post below, i.e. to find out if fans in general want more balanced competition. The second question is what could be changed, and I'm looking at the NFL for ideas. Currently the main ideas I'm debating are: - limit salary to 60% of revenue. Astoundingly only Chelsea and fulham have more than 60% - give TV money equally. Let the bottom team get as much as Chelsea for TV rights. Currently the top team gets the most money, the bottomn team the least. - Away end revenue. Right now the home team keeps all the money, so if Wigan bring 8000 people to Old Trafford, all the money goes to United
Leo No.8 Posted August 16, 2006 Posted August 16, 2006 Putting Old Trafford, its fans, players and directors into a big space Ark and firing them off into deep space would, in my humble opinion, cheer everyone up who watches football a good deal. Televising them all running out of air could be shown on Sky as well. You could make it pay per view...
Andy @ Allerton Posted August 16, 2006 Posted August 16, 2006 Televising them all running out of air could be shown on Sky as well. You could make it pay per view... A Manchester United fan running out of hot air sounds an unlikely prospect.
Leo No.8 Posted August 16, 2006 Posted August 16, 2006 A Manchester United fan running out of hot air sounds an unlikely prospect. I've seen them turn purple and explode a few times in recent seasons though, like when we knocked them out of the cup last year...
Tosh Posted August 16, 2006 Posted August 16, 2006 The games themselves are not typically boring. It's sort of true when all them forreners are amazed that ALL the games are competed for 90 minutes. So the games and the football isn't boring The fact that the league is so dominated by a few clubs is, in my view, dull. Sure, it's nice as LFC tends to be competing with them. But I bet the view from a Charlton site would be slightly different. So yep, i think something should be done about the league structure BUT bear in mind that Ecclestone has tried that with F1 on several occasions and each time all that happens is that the teams with the most cash (Ferrari, Renault, Williams) do alright and the status quo doesn't change So any "solution" has to come back to money. I'd be in favour of a salary cap, and of enforcement of clubs "growing" players rather than (for example) assembling a squad in championship manager stylee. The cash available has to be spread more equally. I am very interested to see what we, Spurs and Villa can do this year. Not because of the competition but to see what can be done with sensible use of resources, use of younger players: in other words good management.
Andy @ Allerton Posted August 16, 2006 Posted August 16, 2006 Reverting to the 2 points for a win system would obviously make the league a lot more competitive and would certainly offer the chance of a suprise fairly often.

Guest sp Posted August 16, 2006 Posted August 16, 2006 there's an article in today's Guardian on the subject of pooling income to spread revenue more equally: http://football.guardian.co.uk/comment/sto...1850873,00.html
Andy @ Allerton Posted August 16, 2006 Posted August 16, 2006 how? Because there is less of a difference between wins and draws
Knox_Harrington Posted August 16, 2006 Posted August 16, 2006 Agree about prize money. Don't see the point. There's a lot to play for in nearly every place now that I can't see it making any difference.

And we all know what happened to them
Andy @ Allerton Posted August 16, 2006 Posted August 16, 2006 dont see how making the numbers less makes the League more competitive Seems to me that if a draw or a loss is less damaging then the league has to be closer.
