'Special' Liverpool suits Bellamy

By John Ley

(Filed: 15/08/2006)

John Toshack, the Wales manager, spoke yesterday of his delight that Craig Bellamy, the new Liverpool striker, had inherited his place as an Anfield forward.

Wales play Bulgaria in Swansea tonight, and Bellamy, who has bedded in well since his arrival at Liverpool, will begin alongside the Norwich striker Robert Earnshaw.

"The most important thing for me is that Craig is happy," said Toshack. "He has worked his way there intelligently. They were his boyhood club. He had his problems at Newcastle, he went to Celtic, he won himself a medal up there and got himself involved in matches, and after his move to Celtic, he went to Blackburn with Mark Hughes. "He did well for Mark, they were good for each other and now he has got this move which is great for him, at his age. It comes at a great time because they are a big, big club, one involved in the Champions League and he has already won his first medal too [the Community Shield]. "Liverpool is very special. A European night there is very special. Those of us who have been privileged enough to have experienced it will never forget. You can take the man out of Liverpool but you can't take Liverpool out of the man. Craig knows what to expect. I was having the same chat to Xabi Alonso, who made his debut for me at Real Sociedad and then went to Liverpool."

And Giggs probably wishes Bellamy was somewhere else ;)

Giggs: Bellamy buy means bad news for United

Aug 15 2006

By Nick Roberts, Daily Post

RYAN GIGGS reckons Craig Bellamy's summer move to Liverpool is bad news for Manchester United.

The Welsh duo, who are expected to take some part in Wales's friendly against Bulgaria in Swansea tonight, will both be looking to overthrow Chelsea when their respective clubs kick off their Premiership seasons this weekend.

But Giggs sees Liverpool's capture of the striker as a very good reason for the other title contenders to be concerned

Giggs said: "Craig loves playing the game and joining such a good club as Liverpool can only benefit him.

"He has always wanted to play in the big tournaments and his talent deserves that. He is a tremendous player and I'm sure he will do well for them.

"He has got speed, confidence and he scores goals so being at Anfield will be good for Wales, but I'm not so sure it's such good news for the rest of he Premiership.

"The move will be good for him in so many ways, not least because at most of his previous clubs Craig has had to shoulder a great deal of the responsibility.

"But now he will have better players around him, which will ease the pressure on him and he probably won't even have to play in every game for Liverpool.

"And he is an important player for Wales too. He is, like me, one of the senior players now and the onus is on us to set standards for the younger lads coming through, both on and off the pitch."

Met Toshack recently by the harbour in Cala Bona. He's a really approachable and freindly man, and made my 8 year old lads day.

It's a pity Tosh isn't quite idolized the way some former Reds are. Maybe those that go off and have further careers and successes tend to be forgotten quicker. He was a great player in his day and the "Ideal" striker we need today.

Always had a soft spot for Toshack, my mam loved him.

His rep is a bit tarnished over here because, God love him, he sucks the life out of you through your eyes if you watch him on the panel on TV3, he's that dead.

He seems lovely outside punditry, e.g. in post-match interviews, though.

From the fragrant and, ahem, seminal 'Gosh, it's Tosh!' nosegay of fine poetry:

"The players will be apprehensive,

But Liverpool! We won't play defensive"

and...

We're coming in to land at Speke,

My legs are feeling very weak.

We've just returned from Barcelona,

And now I'm going for a sauna."

and finally...

"Wales come out in brand new kit

But I don't play cos' I'm not fit."

You gotta love the guy! :hmm:

it's just that drawl of his! You're right, it does send you to sleep, takes about 5 minutes for him to say one sentance.

Its interesting people say he's a nice guy when you meet him, because my impression of him is a grumpy old git - don't think I've ever seen him smile in public.

Good to know he isn't though, because he is certainly a Liverpool legend. By all accounts he was an immensely powerful centre-forward.

He was Leo.

By god I wish we had someone like him now! He and Keegan were some double act

I get a great laugh out of him on TV3. The size of him. I think they have Lawro on a couple of cushions to even things out.

My favourite TV3 moment of his (can't remember the match) was when Bonner asked him something about the advantage of having an away goal.

Big Tosh just tapped his temple with his finger and went "tricks, Packie, tricks".

but they were a great partnership ,great understanding of each other

Think Granada (Gerald Sinstadt) did a thing on them wether they were telepaphic. They showed cards to each other, whilst the other sat away staring at the wall, and had to guess what cards the other was looking at. Tosh got all of Keegan's right.

He could see the relection of the cards in a glass window.

I'm still on the other side of the fence as regards him as a person but there's no doubting his football. Watching him run at and in behind defenders with such pace is brilliant. Creates more space for Crouch, Gerrard and anyone else getting into the area.

He, Gonzalez and Pennant are excellent additions to the squad. We need another centre forward though. Even though Crouch played below his best against Chelsea, his presence in the team means that defenders can't switch off or mark other players / space.

Unless you're John Terry ;)

Mate got me a ticket in the director's box last Wed. Saw Toshack beforehand in the bar. He spent at least twenty minutes walking round the room, looking at all the stuff in cabinets - minor trophies, gifts from other clubs, etc. - and studying the "Liverpool in Europe" map on the wall. Thought it was kind of nice - revisiting old memories and that.

Course, he could just have been avoiding annoying fans like me!
