...three good days in the whole two weeks thanks to one thing and another (wife's mentalist relatives mostly) and glad to get home to my own bed, english telly and uninterrupted net access and various other creature comforts. Having unloaded the car, I walk around the house to find that a copper immersion tank on the top floor has burst and the contents ran down the inside corner of three floors...I mean, fecking fecking shat. worst affected was the ground floor front room, in the very corner where I had a big old american walnut bookcase containing around 600 books, mostly of the penguin classic variety, all trashed including the collapsed bookcase. Feck.

Called Direct line (Buildings) and Norwich Union (contents) and a drying out team was sent within the hour. Few chairs paintings, a carpet and some ceramics were trashed too. By 5pm we had Direct line's chartered loss ajuster in. Nice lad, no fuss, very helpful and sympathetic, agreed to get in specialist builders and decorators with experience in listed buildings resoration and no quibbles - they will pay everything, even the electricty bill thanks to the use of the drying out kit. I expected more of a back and forth, due to the nigh expense of fixing a 300+ year old property with lime mortar, plaster and lath ceilings, stucco work etc, 'non-acryllic paints and so forth, but no - no problem the workmen will be in by next week when the walls are dried out, end of. I told him I was surprised at how easy he made it. he grinned - 'I saw all your daughters Liverpool scarves, shirts and flags in her bedroom'...'got to stick together, havent we?' He got the best filter coffee my missus could make him and all the french galettes he could eat. best bit of the week since watching Rooney and Scholes being sent off in Amsterdam!

Sometimes, it can work in your favour!

Now for Friday when the woman from norwich Union turns up about the contents...let's hope that goes as smoothly.
