As Shanks59 is clearly still living in August 1996 ( ;) ), I thought it would be interesting to take stock of where we were back then. (Houllier was 2 years away, Hyypia 3, the Treble 5, Benitez 8 and Istanbul 9.)

There were whispers about a new goalscoring prodigy coming up through the ranks but the man of the moment was Fowler, who looked like he was on his way to surpassing Rush's goalscoring records for the club. Rushie himself was on his way to Leeds.

Despite the sour ending at Cantona's hands at Wembley, we'd just come off what was our best season of the 1990's after 1990-1 season. McManaman had been one the stars of England's Euro 96 campaign, Collymore hadn't gone off the rails yet, Digger was our holding midfielder and Berger was on his way. Redknapp was injured (again) but surely this coming season would be the one when he proved his doubters wrong...
