Chelsea consider Liverpool bid Thu, Aug 10 2006 17:32

Chelsea are considering Liverpool's John Arne Riise as an alternative if Arsenal reject their £20million bid for Ashley Cole.

Rumours are surfacing in London that Jose Mourinho has placed the Norwegian next on his list of left-sided defensive targets as the capital's big two wrangle over the price-tag for the England star.

Riise was impressive in last season's Champions' League clashes against the Stamford Bridge club and can provide an attacking threat down the flank - something the Blues coach identified in Cole.

Liverpool would be unwilling to sell unless Rafael Benitez can snap up a quick replacement from his Spanish contacts - but Riise's attacking instincts have left the Anfield back four, Sami Hyypia in particular, exposed during the pre-season.

Benitez could be tempted to part with the Norwegian, a firm favourite with the fans and previous management team, but not indispensable to the current coach - if the price is right and Chelsea can certainly afford his personal demands.

Anyone heard this rumour, hardly think it wil happen as he is now cup tied for CL.

Ummmm, surely b*****cks this?! :hmm:

But hey, money talks. Maybe we`ll consider a bid of around £20m.

Hahahahahahaha!

You don't agree?

10 million for a half decent left back?

Bite their hands off.

Would he go though?

Not sure how much he's on here, but they'd likely double it.

Clearly bullsh**, but wouldn't it be great if it was true?

No not really. Firstly because I don't think the way forward is to sell players who would sweat blood for us, and when they hit form, usually maintain it (along with their fitness levels) right through the season. More importantly, the (as always) key question is, who do we replace him with?

He was rubbish last night though.

Riise is far from irreplaceable, upwards to £10m, or with Gallas as part of the deal would be really considered by Rafa IMO, and probably accepted.

Where would we play Gallas?

Seriously, do people really believe this? We would never deal with those scumbags.

It's obviously Chelsea just trying to unsettle Arsenal over Cole and push a deal through.

CB/LB I know he said he wants to play CB, but I think that's partly because he hates Chelsea. Gallas is better than Hyypia anyway IMO.

Oh well thats that sorted then. We'll get rid of 2 of the players who set numerous clean sheet records last season. We can either stick Gallas at left back, despite the fact he hates playing there, on we'll stick him in next to Carra. Of course we're still one left back down then but I'm sure we'll sort something out.

 Firstly there's no chance of it happening, but I'm just saying I think it would improve the squad if Gallas was to arrive. There's no room for sentiments in football, especially if the Chavs were to make a stupid bid for Riise too good too turn down. ala Gallas + cash for example and and we could buy a LB just as good as Riise.

Chelsea overpay for players, that is surely indisputable.

Riise is distinctly average, that is obviously a matter of opinion.

IMO, if Chelsea might overpay us for an average player then that is a good thing.
