Music Software

A friend of mine thinks that since I work 'with computers' I should know how to get him some (preferably free or cheap) music software.

 

Another friend of mine who's a professional musician recommends this:

 

Reason (Propellerheads)

 

but it's not cheap (!)

 

It's rumoured that older versions of this are available for free download - but where/how?

 

Alternatively is there some equivalent software worth using/trying?

 

Anyone know much about this?
