On the downside, it may mean more competition for us. A good as we all think O'Neil may be, he is not as good as rafa, but imagine if Villa do get taken over and he is handed a decent transfer kitty...

he is more than capable of putting together a team to push for a top 4 finish straight away and who knows in a few years time maybe even the premiership. It's not as if he is 'arry down at portsmouth who nobody decent wants to play for.

but i suppose that potentially means more points dropped for the a***, mancs & chavs....

could turn out to be good for the premiership

Think it will finally show, one way or the otther, the true worth of O'Neil, especially if he's given wads he's never had to deal with. A stepping stone to manchester. Competition? More the better, bring it on, bring their best

It will be interesting to see the length of contract he signs. I get the impression that he has a certain amount of integrity and won't sign a 4 yeard deal and then join scum at the end of this season or season after, and it will probably rule him out of the job. If he has a rolling 1 year contract, or a short deal, then maybe?

Think you're spot on there

What the f'ckin ell is the man thinking, taking the villa job

The main who should be in charge of England is now in charge at villa, whilst the man who should be in charge nowhere, is now in charge of england

Mind you, if he does anything with that mess at Villa his reputation should increase event more

Never heard any footballer say a bad word about MON,great appointment for Villa and an even better one if MON brings Robbo and Stevie with him as his backroom staff.

Posted

Press conference to unveil the new Villa manager at 6:30pm apparently. It'd be great if Doug Ellis came out infront of the cameras and announced he would now be managing the team, before laughing manically.

A great appointment for them. If he gets money they're top 6 almost immediately.

Posted

The most important thing he'll do for them is get them out of a relegation battle, which if you'd have asked... well anyone a few weeks ago I imagine we'd all of said Villa will be battling it out at the bottom this year.

Petrov will be another signing. If he can steer them toward a european spot this season it will be fantastic season for them. Depending on what happens with the takeover talks, they could push for consistent european contention, which is where they should at least be.

I do agree with RP on the style of football O'Neill employs. Celtic or Leicester never really excited anyone but were extremely effective, but both of these were on a shoe string budget. This will really test him, expecially if he has a few quid to spend.

I've looked at their squad and I just can't see a great deal of quality. Sure if he gets them organised, they can be top half but I can't see the fuss.

He's well known for having teams playing really sh*te (to watch) football so I'm not sure that the excitement amongst Villa fans will be that long-lived.

I think they'll forgive that if they're not sh*t. Maybe not, like as Villa fans are such meffs.

It looks like the takeover business is still up for grabs with four groups still in the running. I'm not sure how much money O'Neill will get to spend this summer, maybe in January.

Its good to see him back in the game.

Its been a tough few years for him and his family with his wife's illness. Things must be looking up on that front for MON to consider getting back into management, and I'm glad about that

don't know how you figure that

Good enough for HIM to take it to that level. I've a lot of respect for MoN

Venables should be in charge of England. PLUS he's English, whilst not crucial that's preferable. McLaren is Graham Taylor MK2.

No. Graham Taylor had much more success at club level than McLaren.

That's a big shout. Broadly speaking Spurs are about the 5th best side at the moment, and you talk of O'Neill being instantly at that kind of level. Even if you don't think they're that high up, I don't see how they are instantly ahead of Bolton, City, Blackburn, Newcastle, Boro even.

I'd say that O'Neill will sort 'em out pretty damn quickly to get em above the likes of Manchester City and Boro. Man City had a terrible end ot the season, and Pearce has much to prove after some initial OTT hysteria about how good he was. Boro have a manager who's never managed a game in his life.

I'd take O'Neill with a poor squad, above Southgate and Pearce with an average squad.

He'll do as Allardyce has done with Bolton, get 'em well organised and hard to beat, and he'll do it quickly. Then if he gets dosh he'll push 'em on, something Allardyce hasn't done.

Don't expect him to take 'em anywhere near Newcastle this season tho, fink they will be pretty strong tbh.

O'Neill will get them to a solid outfit but until he gets a lot of money to spend, no more than that. I'd say Spurs, Newcastle, Blackburn and Bolton will all be higher than Villa

agree with the first point, disagree with the second. Newcastle will be s****

Pushing for it this season I think I said. Easily top half, probably top 8. I don't think that's such a big shout.

I couldn't pick the order from sixth down to fourteenth. Seems a real lottery. I'd assume Blackburn would definitely finish above tenth but beyond that they're much of a muchness. Nothing to stop Villa getting there but nothing to suggest they will.
