I think he wants most of the young-uns working with his own coaches at this stage of their careers. So the 17 and 18 year olds, I expect will stay here.

Specially lads like Lindfield who's only just made the move up.

I agree I think particularly for defenders playing in the reserves where we play the same system of zonal marking etc. and they are overseen by our coaches is the best thing. However I think that it is important for young players to get competitive games, so hopefully we will blood some in the league cup.

Struggling to think of any examples in recent years of people who we've sent out on loan and who then come back and become real stars for us.

Warnock is probably the one who has come closest to becoming a first teamer.

Am I overlooking someone obvious?

I know it has worked ok for the Mancs with the likes of Beckham, but given our track record I'd rather we kept them here and eased them into things.

Having said that, it does seem to be more a part of the game these days and maybe in the past part of the problem has been that we've loaned people out a bit late (e.g. Raven, Potter etc whose days were already numbered).

Yeah, wouldn't be surprised to see the likes of Anderson and Hobbs playing a couple cup games.

competition wise - it's probably pretty decent in the reserves now, compared to how it was when Houllier was here. Then there where issues I think about younger players getting dropped to make way for first team squad players who couldn't get in the first team a lot (guys like Diomede, Cheyrou, Diao, Traore, Biscan etc). So there wasn't enough sense of competition for places, and getting rewarded with games for good performances. Whereas now, being a very young reserve team, they are all getting an idea of these things. The big difference of course is different pace / standard, and also not playing in front of bigger crowds!

Think they'll be better off staying here, too young to go on loan. You gotta wonder who would take them as well? No one in the Premiership, and I doubt at Championship level either, so it's really not worth loaning them out.
