Svennis to Villa

SVEN Goran Eriksson was last night linked with an astonishing return to English football as manager of Aston Villa. Eriksson, whose England career was ruined by a newspaper sting involving a Fake Sheikh and a spoof Villa takeover, is involved in a fight to buy the club from chairman Doug Ellis.

The Swede's agent, Athole Still, is believed to represent a consortium of Saudi Arabian businessmen hoping to complete a £64million takeover - leading to speculation that Eriksson will move in as manager. Still said yesterday: "Sven would be interested in any job at a club that can challenge for top honours and has a big budget to buy players."

Still was pictured leaving Villa Park yesterday afternoon and his consortium joins a bid from Birmingham businessman Michael Neville who tabled his offer at lunchtime. Neville said: "I submitted a written formal offer. I want to take Aston Villa forward."

U.S billionaire Randy Lerner had expressed an interest, but last night pulled out of the bidding after losing patience following protracted talks with Ellis. In January, Eriksson was set up in a meeting with the Fake Sheikh, who claimed to be a multi-millionaire interested in buying Villa. Eriksson expressed a desire to take over on a £5m-a-year contract and promised to bring David Beckham to the club. The incident led to his departure from the England job, although he stayed on until the side's quarterfinal defeat in the World Cup.

A Villa statement to the Stock Exchange yesterday afternoon read: "The Board of Aston Villa plc can confirm it has received a number of indicative offers which may or may not lead to a formal offer for the issued share capital of the company. "The board will be appraising these offers in due course and will update shareholders and supporters where appropriate." Neville has expressed his desire for Martin O'Neill to replace David O'Leary as manager. O'Leary was sacked last week following a bust-up regarding his role in an alleged play statement criticising chairman Ellis. Eriksson has regularly spoken of his wish to return to club football, but was expected to take up a post in Italy or Spain.

At the moment I can't think of one person in football I hate more than that c*nt Sven. 'Emperors new clothes or what, and after all his f*ck ups he's STILL getting away with it!!

When are people in the know in Football going to cotton on to this imposter. He is one of the lamest managers I have ever seen. He is living on the glories of a Lazio team that probably bribed its way to one scudetto. I hope to God he Fecks off from English footy. I can't stand the thought of seeing his face and hearing his boring voice again.

FECK OFF!

I second that emotion!

Which one is jumping out of the fire though? Villa from going from O'Leary to SGE or SGE from going from England to Villa?
