Atletico call Torres meeting

By Francisco Acedo - Created on 24 Jul 2006

Atletico Madrid are to hold a press conference on Tuesday concerning the future of striker Fernando Torres.

Speculation around the 22-year-old has been rife for some time, but intensified still further following the forward's impressive displays for Spain at the World Cup.

With Ruud van Nistelrooy's departure from Manchester United still seemingly imminent, Torres has persistently been touted as a replacement at Old Trafford.

Atletico have constantly refuted the rumours and Sir Alex Ferguson's comments that he is concentrating on bolstering the midfield seem to bear out those denials.

Ironically, the situation bears a close resemblance to that of Portuguese winger Cristiano Ronaldo, whom The Red Devils have continually insisted is staying.

A team with both the talented prospect and precocious trickster in would certainly prove a fearful force, but United fans will have to wait to see if they get their hands on Torres.

would be delighted if he goes there as they will still lack the player they need in the centre of midfield. Now more than ever considering that Smith is going to be 'rediscovered' as a forward

Hope he goes there, he isn't that good.

He's a good player, but not what United need. No way will he score as many goals as RvN. Fergie cutting his nose off to spite his face....again...

I should say that he isn't that good compared to RVN, he isn't an improvemen twhich is good.

aint there some stupid buy out clause or something? like 38m?

All players in the spanish league have a release clause according to FM. Gonzalez had one which is why we got him for a relatively cheap price.

Yeah they do, it's something to do with Spanish law that means normal contracts aren't legally binding so they all have to have release clauses.

Garcia's transfer was possible because of a clause too, it's usually something like 1,000 times the weekly wage.

He's staying in Madrid. Good work Rafa. We'll be back in for him next summer.
