laptop advice

I am looking for a new laptop and i need advice as to the best ones out there.

 

my current one (DELL) has 512Mb Ram and its very slow,especially on start up, the damn things takes about 4 kinutes to settle after i start it up, is that normal?

 

im told if i get one with 2G RAM it'll be really fast. also need wireless card and bluetooth and MS Word, Excel etc...

 

an IT person told HP were the best, but i have a dell which is fine and my mate has a sony vaio which looks great.

 

any advice as to brands and whether increasing the ram will speed it up?
