Anyone got a Honda?

On the verge of buying a Honda Civic from 1999. I'm too skint for anything more expensive and for the money I've been told they're one of the better made cars that do tend to last. My only help is one amateur mechanic who said the cars and any replacements parts are a bit more expensive but again, better quality

 

The other option is an Opel Astra or an Escort from the same year. Each has done about 100,000 km and are between 1.6 - 1.8 diesels.

 

Thoughts anyone before I throw 3 grand away?
