horrible bunch of feckers

Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool will be among the top seeds for next season's Champions League draw, but Chelsea will again have to play second fiddle.

Despite winning back-to-back Premiership titles, and even with the top Italian sides missing, Chelsea will be among the second seeds. The reason is that the other three English teams have accumulated Uefa co-efficient points by having a longer history in Europe's elite club competition.

It will mean Jose Mourinho's side have a one-in-five chance of being in the same group as current European champions Barcelona, who beat them in the first knockout phase of the competition last season

Beaten finalists Arsenal and 2005 champions Liverpool still need to qualify to take their place among the top seeds for the group phase, while Celtic, who qualified automatically as Scottish champions, will be in the pot of second seeds. Should they qualify, Hearts would almost certainly be one of the lowest seeds.

Even if Juventus and AC Milan win their appeals against their punishments for Italy's match-fixing scandal, their inclusion would not alter the seedings of any British sides in the draw.

Uefa have given the Italian FA until July 25 to confirm which sides will be taking part in European competition next season. But with Juventus demoted to Serie B last week and AC Milan given a massive points deduction, Roma and Chievo are expected to join Inter Milan in the Champions League.

According to Uefa's procedure, the 32 sides in the Champions League will be split into four pots of eight teams, divided according to their current European ranking.

Each group will contain one team from the top seeds, one from the second seeds, one for the third and one from the fourth. Top pot of seeds for Champions League according to current UEFA co-efficient: 1 Barcelona (Spa) 127.0pts, 2 Real Madrid (Spa) 120.0, 3 Inter Milan (Ita) 112.0+, 4 Liverpool (Eng) 105.9*, 5 Arsenal (Eng) 101.9*, 6 Man Utd (Eng) 100.9, 7 Valencia (Spa) 95.0*, 8 Lyon (Fra) 89.7.

Second seeds: 9 Porto (Por) 87.5, 10 PSV Eindhoven (Hol) 81.6, 11 Bayern Munich (Ger) 80.9, 12 Chelsea (Eng) 79.9, 13 Roma (Ita) 76.0+, 14 Ajax (Hol) 60.6*, 15 Celtic (Sco) 60.0, 16 Lille (Fra) 54.7.

Others: 40 Hearts (Sco) 20.0; 64 Cork City (Irl) 1.4, 68 Linfield (NIr) 0.77, 69 The New Saints FC (Wal) 0.77.

(* denotes needs to qualify, + denotes may change if Juventus and AC Milan win appeals in Italy against match-fixing punishment).

These seedings are based on the UEFA co-efficients but there are not official - just someone at PA making a story from working out the top 8, etc

UEFA will not release official seedings until after the Italian imbroglio is sorted out, not before 26 July

BBC are running it to only they blame the Chavs seeding on them having to play Barca not the fact that they were beaten away and couldn't beat us.

They've been the Champions for the last 2 years, they deserve higher than...............14th.

PSV above them? Anyhow, it will all change in the coming weeks.

we didn't get far in 2003 and weren't even in it in 2004.

No, because they have not performed well enough in Europe over the last five years, simple as that, and in three of those they've had Abramovic

1) It's based on the past 5 years, not the past 2 years

en

2) Furthest Chelsea have gotten is semi-final and PSV got there as well the year we won the Cup. PSV have a decent CL history under Hiddink

3) Dont worry, as a blue i dont expect you to know too much about the goings on in Europe's top cup competition ;)

I tihnk it's a fair comment, Chelsea had a poor history prior to the Russian taking over. If you look at only at the last three years - the Abramovic years if you like - it's a different picture:

(this will probably look crap with the formatting)

1 Milan 16,9 31,6 26,1 74,6

2 Arsenal 17,7 19,1 31,8 68,6

3 Barcelona 16,7 17,1 34,2 68,0

4 Lyon 18,5 23,8 24,6 66,8

5 Chelsea 22,7 25,1 17,8 65,6

6 Internazionale 15,9 22,6 24,1 62,6

7 Liverpool 14,7 30,1 17,8 62,6

8 Juventus 12,9 23,6 23,1 59,6

9 Real Madrid 21,7 18,1 17,2 57,0

10 PSV 17,8 25,0 13,5 56,3

11 Valencia 29,7 14,1 5,2 49,0

12 Porto 26,4 13,7 8,8 48,9

13 Bayern 10,6 19,5 17,4 47,5

14 Manchester United 15,7 17,1 12,8 45,6

Which clearly goes to show they've been amongst the top performers over the past three years. Interestingly, ManU are going to struggle to remain in the top 8, unless they get some decent results the next two years, as they're replacing a 29 and a 26.

Man U will be ok now with Juve and Milan missing out for a season.

also, arsenal have always qualified, had a good group performance.

They haven't had the peaks that others have had, but they been consistant to qualify from the groups.

Man U and Real madrid ironically have the most to gain from the italian problems.
