Tel

Steve McClaren will be permitted to enlist Terry Venables to his management staff when he takes the England team into the post-Eriksson era from August 1. The new man hopes to take advantage of the former England manager's experience but it had been felt that there might be opposition from the Football Association's international committee.

Do you really need to read more?

El Tel was doing a good job with the England side before his departure. One of the best managers of the national side in recent times in fact.

Wheeling and dealing with poor players he's no good at - managing already good players (coaching) he is.

Has he ever won a league title at any club? Most over rated manager about cos he has friends in the press.

 But has given us the best England team in the last 15 years, possibly more.

Barca, surely.

He is a good coach, despite his other managerial failings.

1985

and an FA Cup in 1991

Not a bad haul for 29 years in management, he also managed to get the host nation to the semi-final of the european championship therefore ensuring England didn't become the first ever host to fail to do so.

Definitely qualifies him to be involved again with the England team.

He is a media friendly anachronism, and a poor one at that.

He won 2 competitive matches FFS. Hardly even qualifies him for comparison.

We beat Holland 4-1 and everyone remembers him as a great manager. Beating Germany 5-1 in their own back yard was a greater achievement and a much better team.

El Tel is still fondly remembered in Barcalona.....as is Lineker.

We still fondly remember Mad Erik, doesn't make him a great striker.

A European Championship semi final on home soil. Apart from that aload of 0-0 draws in friendlies prior to Euro 96. Even then it'd be like saying David Moyes has provided Everton with their best team in 15 years, in terms of a back handed (and still untrue) compliment.

Good coach but an 80s manager and has a nightmare CV from the last 10 years.

And plainly the much worse team in the quaters against Spain.

With the players he had at his disposal, we should have played much better and gone further in that competition.

you didn't have a better team than Germany.

Venebles is almost certainly way past his best and even at his best he wasn't THAT good - he's a long way short of being a Paisley/Ferguson/Clough/etc.

But compared to the comedy line-up of less-than-no-marks being assembled to 'manage' the England team, he's a STAR!

I think they played better on the day or at least they created more chances which is not quite the same thing. Their failure to take those chances counts strongly against them, though.

Germany were worthy winners of the tournament.

Neverthless I think England-Holland 1996 and England-Germany 2001 are easily England's best EVER performances in competitive matches.

Regardless of what their climate is - and Italy and Greece have much different climates - those countries play a type of football which is better suited to summer conditions.

There are various reasons for this, but they are incidental. Whatever the reason why, British football is played in a different way traditionally.

You might get away with that excuse in Japan or South America but England have a poor record in all climates, whether it's Scandanavia (Euro 92), France (98) or Holland/Belguim (88, 2000)

England can't use the climate excuse in 2008 in Switzerland/Austria either. Or will it be too cold for them?

It'll be hot - just like it was in Sweden, France and Holland/Belgium.

The point isn't the relative climate of the countries, it's the fact that the tournament is played in the heat of summer and the English style of play doesn't suit that.

It's not an 'excuse' - just a fact they are up against.
