One hardware/one software question

hardware - I've got a laptop that (when I start it up) gives a message no system disk error. Is this completely screwed or can it be repaired?

 

(before anyone says it I've tried hitting it with a hammer and chcuking it against the wall )

 

software - Another laptop I have went screwy, so I had to wipe all the existing docs off it, which also took word,excel, powerpoint off too. I don't have to office suite disk to re-load them onto the laptop, is there any way I can download these from the net? without paying my hard earned to Mr Gates et al?
