Penalties are cruel, lets face it.

Given the overall tone of this last World Cup let's abolish penalties and replace them with this:

Each team gets five goes. A player from each team must dribble the ball from the halfway line while a defender from each team, starting on the 18 yard line, runs out and puts a half hearted tackle in. The player on the ball must go down as theatrically as possible. If he fools the ref the team get a point, if he doesn't they get no points. The player who feigns the most horrific injury (leg-break in four places, head decapitated, assassinated by man in crowd with Kalashnikov etc.) gets a bonus point. The team with the most points wins the match.

What do people reckon?

What if the defender gets his dive in first by pretending he has been elbowed out the way?

I think both teams should line up in the centre circle facing each other calling each other names and the last man standing and/or not crying gets to lift the trophy.

How about the defender forgets to go in "half hearted" and takes the attacker out Schumacher style...

This would be acceptable. But only on Ronaldo's go.

A mate of mine semi-seriously said they should do the cross-bat challenge as it is more likely to create heroes than villians (you're more likely to miss than hit, unlike penalties)

Take the penalties at the end of 90minutes - and then play the 30 minutes of extra time - at least it'll make for an interesting extra times - as one team relentlessly attacks as they lost the penalties, whilst the other defends...

At the start of extra time, each time must withdraw a player, so, if no prior red cards, it is 10 a side. Then, every 5 minutes, a further player must be withdrawn if no goal has been scored.

Play on if scores level at 120 minutes and 4 a side.

...until the players start to drop like flies. And then, if no goals are still scored - back at noon the next day in the searing heat for a replay?

Alternatively: replace the out-going player with their wife/girlf.

That's actually a brilliant idea!

Although I love the tension in pennos :D

I guess there'd be a tension too when the ref's just added 6 minutes of injury time to be played and a shot in the LAST second whizzes past the post!
