Serko Posted July 7, 2006 Posted July 7, 2006 Antonio Barragan Deportivo La Coruna have completed the signing of Antonio Barragan from Liverpool. The defender has penned a five-year contract with Depor, although Liverpool will have the option to buy him back in 2008. The transfer fee is believed to be in the region of ?2.5 million (£1.7 million). The 19-year-old Spaniard was also a target for Real Betis but plumped for the Estadio Riazor largely because of coach Joaquin Caparros, who he worked with at Sevilla a couple of years ago. Depor president Augusto Cesar Lendoiro was thrilled to snap up such a promising young player. "This is a great signing for the future of Depor," he commented. SKYSPORTS
Armin_Tamzarian Posted July 7, 2006 Posted July 7, 2006 Very interesting that a buy back clause was put in. To me this is better than a loan. If he progresses as his talent suggests then we have a chance to get him at a reasonable price later. That is if the parting is on mutually good terms.

If he progresses as his talent suggests then we have a chance to get him at a reasonable price later. That is if the parting is on mutually good terms. I don't get how the clause would work. What if he simply insists on staying at Depor, or fancies a move to Madrid ? At any rate it seems decent money at this stage. Maybe we can afford Alves now.
Guest Sabre Posted July 7, 2006 Posted July 7, 2006 Rafa had high hopes for the lad but I think a mixture of injuries and inability to settle were the reasons for him leaving.
Alonso Posted July 7, 2006 Posted July 7, 2006 Rafa had high hopes for the lad but I think a mixture of injuries and inability to settle were the reasons for him leaving. If he didn't settle it's strange that we've got a buy back cluase. Would be interesting to know how much the buy back clause is for or if it'll be determined on his success.
Gravy Posted July 7, 2006 Posted July 7, 2006 Rafa had high hopes for the lad but I think a mixture of injuries and inability to settle were the reasons for him leaving. He looked like, apparently, the absolute dogs. Shame he's gone.
Raj Posted July 7, 2006 Posted July 7, 2006 (edited) Maybe we can afford Alves now. I think this will be the money that we need to complete the deal. If this is correct, then I think its great business, as we will be able to get a first team ready player for right midfield, and to play full back when necessary. As Alves is only 23, it makes even more sense to let Barragan go. Edited July 7, 2006 by roegahnn
Serko Posted July 7, 2006 Author Posted July 7, 2006 it says the buy back clause is activated in 2008. When does Finnan's contract run out?
RafaShanks Posted July 7, 2006 Posted July 7, 2006 I think this will be the money that we need to complete the deal, in my opinion. Oh the irony.
Raj Posted July 7, 2006 Posted July 7, 2006 If he didn't settle it's strange that we've got a buy back cluase. Would be interesting to know how much the buy back clause is for or if it'll be determined on his success. He is only a youngster and its not beyond the realms of possibility that he is unsettled. It must be fairly common for players of that age. In a couple of years time, he will hopefully have matured as a person and we could see a return, if he is successful. On another note, did Barcelona sell Luis to Atletico Madrid and buy him back the following season, by activating his buy-back clause? Or did I just make that up? Pretty sure the buy-back clause, was the same figure he was sold for.
CarraLegend Posted July 7, 2006 Posted July 7, 2006 Good bit of business that by Rick. He did look good at first in the ressies but then got a few injuries and looked pretty poor. Whatever, the circumstances ie Barragan wanting to go home or Rafa just not rating him that much, it's a good deal as it stands.
Leo No.8 Posted July 7, 2006 Posted July 7, 2006 Can't imagine Barragan can have been too motivated by us looking to bring in Alves who basically plays in his position, when we've already got Finnan, Kromkamp etc. Chances of first team football in the near to mid future would seem limited. Better for his development to be playing proper football, so with the buy-back clause this could be good business all-round...
Alonso Posted July 7, 2006 Posted July 7, 2006 How much did he cost us originally? any guesses?I think Figaro eluded to a voluntered nominal fee from us around £350,000 IIRC?
TheLa Posted July 7, 2006 Posted July 7, 2006 How much did he cost us originally? any guesses? Just compo. About three hundred thousand, I think.
RafaShanks Posted July 7, 2006 Posted July 7, 2006 How much did he cost us originally? any guesses? £500k I think. Amazing business considering the Del Nido factor.
Sion Posted July 7, 2006 Posted July 7, 2006 So we've tripled our money in the space of 12 months, with a buy back clause if he becomes a star...Great deal...
alias75 Posted July 7, 2006 Posted July 7, 2006 If this money allows us to sign Alves then i think its a great bit of business. Alves is what 23 so if he signs he should be in the first team for the next 5 years at least all being well. With the buy back clause it means in a couple of years if he has impressed and with Finnan coming to the end of his career we could get him back when he has a real chance of pushing for the first team if he hasnt improved enough then we've tripled our money on the player and signed Alves too (hopefully)
monkey puzzle Posted July 7, 2006 Posted July 7, 2006 Imaginitive transfers, we don't tend to do this type of deal but it seems we're using our heads a little bit more to get the money in. Good deal.
Crazy Horse Posted July 7, 2006 Posted July 7, 2006 All these recent creative deals can mean only one thing - Parry has finally sussed out Championship Manager.
