How do we rate the England Players so far

Joe Cole (four games) - 7.14

It seems Cole is your current favourite in the England team. Who can forget that wonder goal against Sweden? You rewarded his performance in that game with 8.49, which is the highest average for an England player so far.

 

Steven Gerrard (four games) - 6.99

Two goals already, including one beauty against Trinidad and Tobago has helped him in the averages. He has yet to fire on all cylinders with some uncertainty over his exact role in midfield.

 

David Beckham (four games) - 6.65

Maybe they should produce 'Keep Beckham' and 'Drop Beckham' T-shirts, because the England captain is dividing opinion. Becks started with a 7.21 against Paraguay but slumped to 5.78 against Sweden. He was poor against Ecuador before a goal and vomiting elevated him to 6.78.

 

John Terry (four games) - 6.57

The Chelsea captain deservedly ended the Trinidad and Tobago game with an average of 7.80. It was one of his best performances in an England shirt, capped by a goalline clearance that defied Newton's Laws of Motion. He slipped to an average of 5.92 for the Ecuador game.

 

Ashley Cole (four games) - 6.46

Considering Cheryl Tweedy's other half has not played too many games this season, his mark is a tribute to how well he has coped. He peaked with a 7.55 against Ecuador.

 

Rio Ferdinand (four games) - 6.24

Out of the 'Ferdinand and Terry' partnership, it is Ferdinand who has a lower average. His rating may have been worse had he not been replaced by Sol Campbell prior to the final-minute debacle against Sweden.

 

Frank Lampard (four games) - 6.08

Somebody has to tell Chelsea's darling to work in tandem with Gerrard. He is certainly not shot-shy with 21 attempts on goal, but he failed to score from any of those. An apparent square peg in a midfield of round holes, he scored just 5.63 against Ecuador.

 

Paul Robinson (four games) - 6.05

Robinson's average is distinctly average. He began with a 6.56 against Paraguay and then scored 5.80 against Ecuador, looking far from confident against the second-round opponents as he flapped at balls delivered in from the wings.

 

 

 

THE OTHERS

 

(England players who have featured in three games or less)

Aaron Lennon (two games) - 7.41

Tottenham's pocket dynamo has only been on the pitch for 35 minutes, but has impressed - being both lively and threatening. Beckham only averaged 6.65. Are you making a case?

 

Michael Carrick (one game) - 7.09

You seem to agree with the BBC's Alan Hansen that Carrick played well against Ecuador.

 

Wayne Rooney (three games) - 6.95

Trinidad and Tobago - 6.38, Sweden - 6.88 and Ecuador - 7.58. Those averages prove he is England's most improved player. At this rate we may have to tweak the Rater so that it goes up to 11.

 

Peter Crouch (three games) 6.40

Poor old Crouchy. A starter against Paraguay and Trinidad & Tobago, who he scored against. Brought on after Michael Owen's injury in the Sweden game, and then dropped for the Ecuador tie. Maybe if he had performed his 'Crouchbotics' he would have scored higher.

 

Owen Hargreaves (three games) - 6.06

Jeered when replacing Joe Cole against Trinidad and Tobago and given an average of 4.57 for his eight minutes on the pitch. But he turned his fortunes around with better displays against Sweden (6.92) and Ecuador (6.68).

 

Jamie Carragher (three games) - 5.83

Hard to judge the Liverpool player's efforts, having been shoved from midfield anchor to right-back and completed just one full game. That was against Sweden when the backline looked as steady as an England fan after a session on Stuttgart's local brew.

 

Stewart Downing (three games) - 5.76

The left-sided Middlesbrough player has yet to win the hearts of our Player Rater users.

 

Gary Neville (one game) - 5.72

Injury has prevented the Manchester United right-back from improving his average.

 

Michael Owen (two games) - 5.63

Crocked again before he had a chance to shine. Was a good performance just round the corner? We will never know.

 

Sol Campbell (one game) - 5.65

Campbell was one of the players that failed to defend a throw-in from the left which led to Sweden's equaliser.

Beckham, Lampard & Robinson all over-rated there
