A question to any photo persons who are good at editing photos...

I am in the process of trying to remove a date from a photo using a fairly standard photo editing program. The problem I face is that the date is overlayed onto a cliff in the background. This should not be a problem but zooming in, the background is made up of LOADS of little pixels of different colours. I am trying to avoid updating the image pixel by pixel, so my question is...

 

Can anyone suggest any decent ways of removing the date from the photo? Anyone done anything like this before?
