AE Posted June 28, 2006 Posted June 28, 2006 I believe the "spanish correspondent" confirmed that to be the case a while back. Of course we all know he's a fake so I guess he just got lucky.

jimmylibel Posted June 28, 2006 Posted June 28, 2006 "Benitez will welcome at least three new faces to Melwood when the players return, with Aurelio joining fellow South American Gabriel Paletta and new striker Craig Bellamy. Unfortunately, Mark Gonzalez will still need to await clearance from the department for education and employment, although that decision is anticipated a week today. Ideally, Benitez wants at least a fifth new face to join the club by then - followed by another two before the transfer deadline." Em - who's the 7th player? Bellamy, Paletta, Gonzalez, Aurelio, Alves, Kuyt and ???
Guest belli Posted June 28, 2006 Posted June 28, 2006 So our transfer budget is £20mill plus what Rafa gets from sales and it looks like Alves or Kuyt not both?
beejay Posted June 28, 2006 Posted June 28, 2006 Aurelio on a free ; Paletta for £2m ; Bellamy £6m ; Alves £10m (someone on RAWK saying we have agreed terms now) ; but no money left over for Kuyt without selling? Morientes sold for £3m meaning our budget was £15m? Can't see it meself. If Rafa wants Kuyt we will get him, but we do need to get rid of a few (Dudek/Traore/Le Tallec/Pongolle/Cisse loan).
Guz Posted June 28, 2006 Posted June 28, 2006 If Kuyt is Plan B to Alves does that mean he and/or Bellamy will spend some time on the right?

The article also suggests he ideally wants to sign AN Other as well.

Gravy Posted June 28, 2006 Posted June 28, 2006 I believe the Stevie Gerrard connection said this months ago did he not?

It might well be at the moment although Bascombe seems to think if Alves falls through we'll go for Pennant and Kuyt so maybe £18m or something. We have an enormous squad and havent qualified for the money spinning CL yet, it's hardly a shock.
Rahul Posted June 28, 2006 Posted June 28, 2006 7th could be a random squad or youth player. Not necessarily a big signing. probably wouldn't have heard of him.

Squad player certainly but I don't think Bascombe is including youth players in that analysis. Supposed to be more than one of them arriving anyway.
Rimbeux Posted June 28, 2006 Posted June 28, 2006 Plan A buy Alves, sell some deadwood, watch the ground settle, buy Kuyt for a decent price, and Pennant for a decent price if still available Plan B buy Pennant, look for an early deal on Kuyt involving deadwood, sell some players, see if Seville will be sensible about a deeply unsettled Alves
Guest belli Posted June 28, 2006 Posted June 28, 2006 So we have a choice of what we do with £13 - £15mill. Viduka and Alves or Kuyt and Pennant

At a guess i'd say that'd be about right. Think thats what Bascombe is getting at with his "Benitez wants a fifth signing in the next week, then two more before the deadline" ie early August if we've mauled someone in the first leg or late August if we havent. Providing we get through that is, which we should.
