Totally not match fit - and although he has some skill - I'm still not fully convinced by him.

He seems one of these luxury players - if the team is playing well and usually winning - then he'll always pop up with a fantastic goal or two for the press and the cameras.

When things aren't going well or they need to change it all around - more often than not he vanishes, his head drops and he struggles - quite often letting his bad temper get the better of him.

Speaking about this with a couple of Manc season ticket holder mates I have - they aren't as impressed with him as people would have you believe the Manc fans are.

He certainly has the potential - but to suggest he could get near many of the top players in the game today - and this moment - is silly in my opinion.

No offence, but that's a pile of crap. He's the best young player in the world in my opinion. He might not have the technical skills of a Messi, but he has the strength, power, awareness and game intelligence to compensate. He's a beast of a player.

If he'd got that injury six weeks earlier we would have finished second, no problem. He carried that shower.

English players are always over-hyped. All the claims about him being the best in the world are over the top. He's very good, yes, but he needs to improve. He would do that with better players around him and with a better Manager than Ferguson who is past his sell-by.

His lack of fitness and the desperation of that clown Eriksson have meant he's been below his best. Looks like he'll be played out of position today as well.

The power of the PR machine in England can't be overstated though: it got Lumplard voted second best player in the world when he's not even the second best player at Chelsea.

And in the same instance, we in England can often be too over critical and shy of believing that our players are the best and superior to the more technical type players from Spain or Italy.

You ask any top club in Europe if they want to buy Gerrard, Lampard, Rooney, Cole, Terry and they would say name your price.

No offence taken.

I'm not saying he isn't a very, very good player.

Just nowhere near as good as he is being hyped as being.

Maybe one day if he doesn't burn himself out or let himself go like a Gasgoine or Best - then MAYBE - he might eventually become an amazing player.

But he's still got a long, long way to go.

I've seen endless POTENTIAL world class England players go off the rails/get injured/stop improving - it's up to him and a good manager to get the best out of him and improve him.

I'd take Rooney over Robhino anyday. He might look good when he flicks the ball over his head or nutmegs someone for the tenth time, but when has he ever really dominated a game like Rooney has, especially in England where the game is harder and more physical.

if there's anyone who's hyped is these young kids from abroad like Robhino and Messi.

When has Rooney ever really dominated a game in England?

He has cruised in games where the team is already ahead and doing well and I've seen him fade in games where they are struggling or it's not quite coming off.

Surely you must agree that John Terry is one of the best central defenders out there?

Robinho is young and because he plays for a country which produces loads of good players he doesnt start.. its all hypothetical about how he would fare in England.. hes won more than Rooney though

I think some players can justifiably be praised but there are plenty who are being called "world class" after two or three good games. I know it might seem like a Lumplard witch hunt (and hey, why not?) but what's he ever done of note in the Champions League or in a big international game?

It applies to other areas in football as well: look at the alleged candidates for the England job, Stuart Pearce for example. Not that long ago John Gregory was being tipped as the next big thing-where is he now? Incidentally, don't answer that, I don't want to know!

Rooney has all the ability to become a great player but I would be concerned about the number of games he's playing at his age and the burdens placed on his shoulders by both club and country. We saw it with Michael Owen. I know his latest injury was pure bad luck but at 26 or whatever he is his body is already creaking from over playing at a young age. Rafa wouldn't flog Michael like Gerard did and Ferguson and Eriksson have no real option but to do it.

He looks average though because he's not really fit and that's no surprise after his injury.

really.. all blood and thunder with average technique and no pace.. for me he is a good defender but hes not in the top 5..

btw Im not saying Rooney is a poor player.. probably Englands second best player when fully fit..

He's good in England but he's not that mobile. Like Steve Bruce for the Mancs, Terry has an excellent holding midfielder protecting him from pacey forwards. He has struggled in the Champions League at times.

Some European clubs would want him but he's not complete enough for say Milan or Barca.

To me he's Terry Butcher reincarnate.

personally, I don't give a s***

I do.. when I see that chavc*** get away with numerous handballs in the penalty area.. hes a poor mans Carra as a defender, although he is much better in the opponents box than Carra probably ever will be but Carra doesnt get the praise..

It's an age old argument but England shouldn't be relying on a post-pubescent prodigy to win them a World Cup. Messi is arguably a better player, but cannot get a game because of experience and proven world-class talent ahead of him.

England simply cannot justify the hype nor compete with the strength in depth and quality that other nations have.

Would love to be proved wrong though...

Who is?

Rooney looked poor again yesterday. 1 slight flash of brilliance and nowt else for another 90 mins.

He has the potential to be one of the best at the tournament Andy. He has only shown flashes of his ability in this WC but then again he's hardly played in the last two months. He, Gerrard, and possibly Terry are the only English players who would get a game for, say, Argentina.

The lad is coming back from injury and has only played twice in 8 weeks.

Think Carra would be playing next to Ayala in all seriousness. And though it pains me I think Neville would be in with a shout at right-back. I also think Lennon or SWP would be close to a game as they have pace, can play wide and are direct.
