Had a bit of a disagreement with a mate yesterday regarding this. I was of the opinion that a club CAN permanently sign an injured player, he claims they can't.

Anyone know for sure?

As I thought then, I was sure this was the case but couldn't back up my argument with any examples! Anyone know of any?

Surely Kirkland was injured when we signed him!!

You can sign injured players, it's up to the club in question - another example is Henchoz who was also injured when we signed him.

The issue is the insurance. With a serious injury (eg snapped leg, cruciate) the insurers will want to be very sure of full recovery before agreeing to insure the player - and no club would take someone on without insurance (think van kneestillsore's first attempt to sign for united). With minor injuries the same basic rule applies but you can be sure of recovery, therefore can get insurance - hence you can sign injured players.
