England not contenders - Gerrard

Steven Gerrard admits England have no chance of winning the World Cup if they continue to play as they did against Paraguay and Trinidad and Tobago.

England began the tournament as one of the favourites, but Gerrard admits that is no longer the case.

"No, I don't think so - our form as a team has got to improve," the Liverpool midfielder told BBC Sport.

"We need to hit top form pretty quickly. There are still a couple of gears to go into."

But Gerrard said the most important thing was that England had qualified for the knockout stages of the World Cup with their 2-0 win over Trinidad and Tobago on Thursday.

"It's pleasing to be in the last 16," said Gerrard, who scored England's second goal in the victory.

"It was really difficult out there for an hour and we were finding them really difficult to break down. They got a lot of luck on the night."

England next face Sweden on Tuesday and it is uncertain whether Gerrard will play or not.

The Liverpool midfielder was booked against Paraguay and would miss England's second-round match if shown another yellow card. But he insists he wants to start.

He said: "I think I should. I want to play in every game but I would have to be sensible.

"It's a question (if he starts or not) that you would have to ask Sven-Goran Eriksson."

I thought that yellow cards in the group stages didn't count for the knockout stages, or is that only for 1?

Make me laugh Ingurland, they had one of the best teams in the world a few weeks ago and a real chance of winning it.
