The WC so far hasn't knocked me sideways; maybe that's living in the US, where it gets minimal coverage, or maybe it's cagey 1st round games with no-one wanting to concede too much ground.

The 2nd round of games is where it could really open up, as teams who've dropped points go for it a bit more knowing that they can't drop any more.

Goal of the tourny so far? Klose I'd say

Disappointment - France

Pleasant surprise - Czechs (I thought they may fall flat) or Croatia - did much better against an admittedly off-colour Brasil side than I thought they would.

So far - no pennos? Only 2 red cards. The refs have reffed sensibly, if not always well. But it's an impossible job.

No real classic games & quite a few dull ones, with most of them somewhere in the middle.

The k/o stages could be belting though. Italy, Brasil, Holland, Spain, Czechs, Croatia, (england) & Argentina all looking pretty solid with a few other teams like Portugal who must have something up their sleeves.

Anyone changed their minds about the eventual outcome(s)?

There was a penalty today in the Spain game.

Czechs and Italy have looked great.

nice to see xabi alonso proving what a world class player he is on the biggest stage.

rosicky could come out of it the star of the tournament. great business by wenger getting him signed before his value doubles.

You wont win this without a balanced team, and that means a proper water carrier England, Germany.

Don't have all your big names on the pitch if they are not up to it, you will win well, and nobody will complain, well done Spain, wake up England, Brazil, France

Martin Jol on five live is far better to listen to than Lawro, even if he is obsessed with matching up all over the pitch, Ian Wright is 11 years old and drinks too much cherryade.

Australia play like Everton

The refs are top

I can see why Drogba wants out of Chelsea, he's a much better player than he can show there, his team are very very good

If that's Totti half fit, Italy will go close

Argentina looked a different level to everyone, team-wise. Looked to have a good few gears to go through yet.

Spain should get a lot of confidence and seem to have loads of options (possibilities) to switch if they need to. Forward momentum is theirs if they can grasp it.

Brazil will go as far as the fun of Ronaldinho will take them.

Czechs can take Hollands place as the team all the neutrals favour.

Germany are at home, in a World Cup and should frighten the life out of anyone who draw them. Its the nature of the competition.

Best goal: Kaka - it was his left peg, if that was Gerrard or anyone else on their weaker foot we'd be going bananas about it.

Best first round of games in the tournament I can remember, nothing really ridiculously dull and cagey and much less of a gap between top and bottom sides than before.

Agreed, except for the Kaka bit... a player of that level should be able to do that and it's expected. I'd expect it of Gerrad too. If it was Roberto Carlos on his right peg, well then it might be classed as something special.

I still fancy David Villa for Golden Boot... I wonder what the odds were at the start of the tournament.

I put a tenner on him at 54-1
