maybe after some of the teams have played more than one game people can start making these judgements

I think Essien has been awesome so far. Granted only 1 game played, but he looked like he was doing everything himself (apart from being in goal)

Rosisky, Joe Cole, Pirlo

Rosicky plays one good game against a s**** team and suddenly he is the best in the world?

As long as Gerrard is holding the midfield he won't shine. Kaka might be the best. As i wrote earlier in this forum. I still believe he is more worth to any team than Ronaldinho. Nedved is also a good option.

Agree he was very good and easily outshone the rest in midfield but just how fecking strong is Ronnie? The were two or three occassions where he came away with the ball despite the Croats trying to chop his legs off.

yup.. if we're going on the game they've played so far then Essien is ahead of everyone - he was awesome the other night.. Kaka's second to him..

A bit premature this, but Riqelme has been the best so far for actually running a game with Pirlo a contender.

Gerrard way down the list but well ahead of Vieira and Zidane.

Judging by first-game performances only, he's been the best midfielder by a mile - took on the Italian midfield single-handedly and won.

Funny, I haven't been overly impressed with him since he joined Chelsea but he was awesome on Monday night.

Sos if this is a bit off point but I was watching an interview where bbc were interviewing Lampard the other day and Lineker said whether it was tactics that he was playing further up the field. The fat t*** completely evaded the question. If our lads kicked up a huff and a puff about not playing in their rightful positions we wouldn't have Carra bein the f***in dogs body of the side, never mind Neville being there, and Lampard would be doing Gerrards bitch work instead of the other way around!!

saw that interview. Lineker asked if it was planned that Gerrard sat deeper for him to go forward. lampard said there was no plan for that to happen, its just the way it turned out in that particular match.

Like it happens every match, you fat c***, installing yourself 30 yards from goal and waiting for the chance to shoot.

Its a sin that the greatest engine in English football is being told to stop behind the back four and not make runs into the box. I don't know about stats (someone enlighten me) but I bet Gerrard covers far more ground than Lampard.

For the sake of this thread, the three best midfielders I've seen this world cup are Rosicky, Nedved and Riquelme

Figo looked good for Portugal. Surprised he still has a bit of pace.

actually that's a good shout - he played really well the other day and looked pretty quick..

Xavi was the best player by a mile today!

I think he is best player of the first round

I think it is very difficult to be best of the midfielders, if the other midfielders are Albelda, Cesc, Alonso and Senna. He was clearly better!

I was most impressed by Essien's performance so far. Really shows how much he is stifled by his role in Chelsea's system, like Tiago before him.

Xavi was nothing special today. Had a decent game. The 2 players that stood out for Spain was Puyol and Torres.
