Converting VOB files to AVI

I'm not a wizard when it comes to computers, but I have some video stored in VOB format and I would like to convert it to AVI files, so I can share it with family and friends. Anyone know of a program that can handle that conversion. Preferably a free program.

 

Second I'm having a bit of trouble with sound on my WMP when I play DVD's. Well to be honest there isn't any sound Anyone able to help me out with that? I am able to play MP3's etc, only video seems to be the problem....
