Anyone else think he was overrated as a player?

You can't deny his leadership and commitment qualities, but, imo, he wasn't in the same league as Souness as a player.

I had high hopes that Gerrard would be that box to box type player like Keane, but he seems to have lost a bit of that aggression and doesn't seem comfortable in a defensive role anymore.

Yeah that Gerrard's really gone down hill.

He's a different but all round better player than Keane, who was a monster, a huge presence, tremendous leader, feared opponent.

Who said anything about him going downhill?

If you'd opened that pea sized mind of yours for a second you would realise that i never said anything of the sort, and was alluding to the fact that Gerrard is much more of an attacking player these days (one of the best) compared to when he burst onto the scene as more of a defensive type player with a lot more aggression, like Keane, but he seems to have lost that side of his game.

I think people under estimate those qualities you mentioned. I agree other midfielders probably had more to their games than Keane (although I wouldnt call him a limited player either, he was excellent). But the amount that Keane brought to the mancs when he was at their prime was frightening. You cant just go out and buy that sort of leadership, determination and aggression. He had his problems and at times was a f***ing nutter, but he was one of the players that I thought would've given us the extra step in the 90s.

so you're disappointed with Gerrard?

Great player

Easily the best player of the second half of the 90's / early 00's.

He deservedly won many plaudits for his tackling and leadership but his use of the ball was always underrated.

Nope.

Some say that "You're only as good as the players you play against" and unfortunately until Stevie G arrived on the scene 'Rugged Roy' had it virtually his own way - I always thought he disappeared a lot during games and was let off the hook a lot by referees during Man Yoo 'golden period' ;)

Overrated, appalling footballer to watch. No skill, no flair, amateurish technique, average passer/shooter/tackler and dirty as hell. Good motivator, good engine and determined and all that, but crap when it comes to anything else. Gerrard is miles better, as was Vieira.

hahhaha

was watchign the New England Revolution last night (good game- Nicols mob had a equalizer wiped out due to one of the worst offside decisions i"ve seen in years - one that was worse cost his lot a 1 nil defeat last week) and they were heavily advertising that Celtic were going to be playing in Boston on July 17th - their first visit to the area in 30 years (so who the hell played Liverpool here 2 years ago????). The main attraction would be seeing Roy Keane Play!!!!

:D

I am serious. I just don't rate him. In the same way a lot of us don't rate Lampard, or the way a lot of Mancs don't rate Gerrard. Keane is not a player I enjoy watching. Give me Ronaldinho any day.
