Some gems from the Argentina - Ivory Coast game:

"This was one of the most eagerly anticipated games on day 2 of the World Cup" - there were only 3 games played, idiots.

After Ivory Coast scored:

"And a game that Argentina have controlled has now turned 360 degrees" - first off mate nobody controlled that game, it was pretty sloppy - second, if it turned 360 degrees then that would put it right back to where it started from, idiot.

Post-game wrapup:

"Argentina are the best team we've seen in this World Cup" - erm, it was the 5th game, and they actually didn't look that outstanding at all.

This is going to be a long and tedious World Cup unless I find my mute button...

Agreed and constantly referring to Drogba as "one of the worlds greatest strikers" really annoyed me.

What really killed me though was listening to JP Delacamera and Eric Wynalda going on about the keeper from Trinidad and Tobago being Kelvin Jack when it clearly was Shaka Hislop. They must have called him Jack about 10 different times when it was clear that Hislop had started in his place. Don't these donkey's have a monitor they watch?

The picture quality was far better on Univision than on ESPN2. Also, you don't have the annoying ticker on the bottom of the screen. Plus no annoying no-nothing Americans commentating.

Oh yeah, almost forgot that b******s.

argentina were in perfect control of the game until then. Kept the Ivory coast from too large chances and kept possesion for large parts of the 2nd half.

Sure thing. You should call ESPN and get yourself setup to do some commentary.

the covergae really is awful....of course yes its better than nothing, but still with hardly any build up to the game,no interviews and hardly any analysis, you`d at least hope for some better comentary......todays between argentina and the ivory coast was simply dreadful..............i was almost pleading for "mr onion bag"!

And this is the nightmare I've been living with ever since they started putting an emphasis on showing matches on tv.

I suppose I should be grateful that I get to watch a match at all

 I remember that.....

how annoying is when the commentator always says "OHH BABY!" after a miss or chance to score.

It's really annoying also that the commentators are like 2 seconds behind when a team almost scores.

Univision has much better quality.

Ha, I forgot about "OHHH BABY!" The funniest part of it was it was usually after the 1st commentator had already said his thoughts on the previous action, 20 seconds later the 2nd commentator fakes an orgasm.

They did seem behind a couple of seconds didn't they? Still, better than a game I watched last year where they were ahead 10 seconds...guess it was a satellite thing, but I knew a goal was scored before it actually happened.

It's a dire situation we're in.

After watching the England Paraguay and Sweden T&T games with the American commentator (not much better than John 'I want to shag Rooney and Beckham' Watson), I decided enough was enough.

Watched the Argie Ivory Coast game with Chinese commentary - I dont understand a word of it, but it stopped me from getting all worked up.

ok, these guys are not the greatest commentators on the planet.

but you have to remember that they are commentating to Americans who might not have watched soccer on TV before as well as the "expert" ex pats from all over the world.

Americans want a bit more than "Beckham to Gerrard, infield to Lampard." Watch any of their major sports and there is always much more than just the game being talked about.

They are trying to get people who are anti-soccer in a big way to at least give it a chance.

I am not defending them in anyway, but just trying to put a different spin on what they are trying to do.

I like the way that they have gone to an update bar at the top of the screen and not in one of the corners, I just wish ESPN & ESPN2 would lose the permanent crawl at the bottom of the screen during the game, put it on at half time, or just on the half hour.

As for Univision, those guys just scream.

You're right - they at least have an excuse. Mind you, that doesn't mean they know any more about football, because they know precisely f*** all.

What's the likes of Motson's, etc.s excuse?

I've actually decided I'm to watch the rest of the World Cup with Chinese commentary. They make more sense than their English counterparts, and that with me not understanding a word.

I've noticed that they are particularly bad so far in this WC. Balboa is absolutely awful -- what an arrogant tw*t (Michael Beckham!). Julie Foudy is a tongue-tied moron too. If they wanted a chick, they should have had that one who ripped her shirt off that time -- at least she seems like she'd be great fun to get drunk with. Shep Messing just loves those comparisons with other American sports, but I have to think he has been instructed to do that.

I'm still looking for Seamus Malin -- he's the best by a long walk.

Nevertheless, I'm happy that we have the games at all. Fifteen years ago it was unthinkable.

the espn crawl is horrendous, I dislike it soo much.

today the commentary has beeen the worst, esp the arg-ivc match..

too much baseball/basketball in the paint talk..

well so far they are the best team out of them that have played! Not much competition granted.

Anyway, while we're at it - that commentator on ITV - who is he? :hmm: He tries far to hard to be dramatic and 'different', he needs shooting.

We have Motson and David Pleat though

Motty thinking england were playing Uruguay.

Pleat calling the Ivory Coast gk Le Tissier

Posted

so the general view is that ALL the commentators and their sidekicks are totally useless.

Bring back David Coleman and Brian Moore.!!! But never bring back Gerald Sinstadt.

How is Clive "that balmy night" doing for ITV?

Posted

Pleat is f***ing class.. What a guy.

Some of the stuff he comes out with.. He just knows none of the players and says completely irrelevant things - can't wait for his next game.

For the English among us, part of the enjoyment in watching the excellent World Cup stories on BBC2 has been all the old commentary, particularly David Coleman.

Johnny Harkes isn't bad today, I have to admit. He knows enough not to say these embarassing American comparisons.

Spot on. Credit where it's due, this morning's commentary was fine, good even.
