Manchester United have had a £10m bid for midfielder Michael Carrick rejected by Tottenham, BBC Sport can reveal.

Spurs dismissed the offer, insisting United would have to double their offer to land the 24-year-old, who is part of the England squad at the World Cup.

Manchester United faxed their offer to Tottenham on Friday, but it was swiftly turned down.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson wants Carrick as a replacement for Roy Keane who left the club last December.

He's a decent player but not worth that amount of money surely.

Spuds have got a midfielder lined up haven't they? cant remembre his name now tho, St Etienne guy I think

Anyway, I reckon that once ManU say they are willing to overpay even more for Carrick, they will let him go. Very decent profit on a very good but not great player.

Would love if Man U signed him. Nowhere near good enough.

I dont agree. I think he will be, and have liked him for years. If he was Italian he would be worth twice as much.

No mate, he wouldn't.

He is an ok premiership footballer, certainly not even a start to replacing Keane, 'he's a lightweight'!

Ok. That will be the view of most on here, but I dont agree. I think we should pay whatever it takes to get him. Dont get me wrong, I would rather have Gerrard, but he is a dumb sod and would not come to us. ;)

If you are willing to pay 'whatever' then surely there are better options out there? Carrick is a solid player, but he lacks the inspiration you need from your central midfielders imo.

Would you also agree that Carrick is inferior to Fabregas, Lampard, Essien, Makelele, Savage, Hamman, Barton, Nolan, Arteta, Reo Coker *

(*selected off the top of my head as central midfielders, and without even mentioning our 3 central midfielders )

Can't see how Carrick would improve you that much TBH. Hope you have to pay through the nose to get him. Reo Coker would be a better bet.

Same here mate, infact i'd be absolutely delighted especially at something over £10m, he's a decent player but cant defend that great and has a lot of off days with his passing. A very very poor mans Alonso.

LOL @ ManUre. Spurs are crazy to turn down such cash for Carrick, a vastly overrated player.

£10m for Carrick makes our Alves bid a bargain

Much prefer value for money myself and that is yet another benefit of having Rafa here

Carrick is a decent player. he's not going to fly into tackles like Keane did, but he'll do a good job for United if he goes.

Overpriced mind you, but then what English players aren't?

He was part of the WHU that contained Ferdinand (the Rio version), Lampard, Cole (Joe), Defoe (just on the edges), and that amazing right back who couldn't get a game for Chelsea... At the time, the Hammer's fans I knew (and I grew up in Hammer-land) reckoned Carrick to be the pick of the bunch.

As we have variously rubbished the other members of that list from time to time, I would be led to suggest that Carrick might well be better than we think and could be brought on much further with the right manager/team.

Definitely. Carrick is an English Didi in the making

Carrick's an excellent player, Utd would make him a great player and he'd make them a better team. Scratch that, he WILL make them a better team. He'll be there next season and Utd will improve.

We don't want this to happen if we're wise.

He's undoubtedly a very good player, but they're going to bring in quality for that position anyway. There are better players they could be going for in that position that I'd be more worried about, Lyon's Diarra for one. £10m is about right for him.

Could be. Difference is that Carrick plays in this league already, Maldini. Diarra might be a better buy - I don't know - but Carrick will be an excellent buy. I don't care about the price and nor do United, it matters not at all.
