Because the Irish never go over the top with their coverage of their sporting heros.

But my point is that we don't saturate you with our media. Sky News Ireland, BBC Northern Ireland, UTV, The Irish Sun, The Irish Mirror etc. are all leading with stories of metatarsals and "our boys".

Errr, whose fault is that?

Much the same as the 'support Ireland' bollix that we endured during '94 although admittedly there wasn't overblown expectation about the team going far.

Surely it's only us who support plucky fighters who wilt at the tough end and drugged up cheats?

who was lauded by the uk media as a 'british boxer' until he lost his title.

i don't think you see either of those names you mentioned wheeled out as ubiquitously as geoff hurst either.

hardly surprising - one is a sport/former sportsman mostly shown on PPV on SKY in the early hours of the morning, the other is a drugs cheat.

But when they won their titles the reaction wasn't what i'd call restrained.

Fair play for it too, sporting stars/heroes should be feted - but then i dont have a massive chip on my shoulder about all this

well, when Ireland win the World Cup we'll let you bang on about it for 40 years, deal?

I suppose we could also object to be called "bitter barstards" with or without supporting the drugcheatcummaninwoman'sbodyexoilimpicswimmur

40 years was it that long ago? ;) Seems more recent for some reason or another

So that means it's been banged into me since I was 2 years old

The bike fell off the ceiling, the donkey bolted out of the living room and the gypsy bringing the stolen coal just walked over the newly laid tarmac path to our front door all at the same time thus diverting the attention of all us Paddys on here...

I think given circumstances a few gramatical lapses won't go amiss ;)

Stephen Roche or Kieran Fallon are probably our best ever sportsmen.

Sean Kelly, despite not winning the Tour or the Giro like Roche was better IMO.

It has been said that Roche was also a drugs cheat . . . .
