One of my lecturers has just been in to tell me all about a one-on-one intensive communication class she had with an executive for a big main street Spanish bank this morning. The two hour session was held here in Sevilla. My client, her student, had just spent a fortnight in Leeds on a fact finding trip for his bank

Part of the session related to place and shop vocabulary went like this:

Maria del Mar: ?Where would you go if you wanted to buy some meat??

Jaime: ?The cornershop.?

MDM: ?Okay, that?s fine. What would you do if you had to buy a newspaper??

Jaime: ?I?d go to the corner shop.?

MDM: ?Good, what about a coffee? You want to have a coffee? Where would you go??

Jaime: ?The cornershop.?

MDM: ?Let?s try something different. A pet. Jaime, you want to buy a pet as a present? Where can you go to get one?

Jaime: ?The cornershop.?

At this point Maria del Mar begins to think that Jaime is taking the pisch.

She starts again ? this time trying to entice Jaime to give her the specific vocabulary that she knows he has. MDM fishing for ?butchers?

MDM: ?Okay. Jaime. You want to buy some special meat. Meat that you know they only sell in a specific place. A place that also sells salami, sausages, and bacon. Not the cornershop. Another place?

Jaime: ?Not the corner shop??

MDM: ?No, Jaime. Not the corner shop this time. Where would you go for the meat??

A few seconds silence then Jaime hits back with:

?The shop on the corner??

The poor girl.
