Huyton_Red Posted June 8, 2006 Posted June 8, 2006 Never really thought about this because it has never directly affected me in anyway. They debated it on newsnight last night, after devolution MP's from english constituncies are not allowed to vote on scottish issues, but scottish MP's are allowed to vote on English issues. So what ? The one major thing that stuck out for me last night was the issue of free care for the eldery, this will impact on every one of us at some stage. In scotland, every elderly person is entitled to free healthcare, a decsion made by the scottish parliment and one I fully a agree with. However, in England, care for the elderly is means tested, meaning that if you have worked all your life and own a home or any other asset you will be forced to sell that home or asset to pay for care. As it stands, english pensioners are suffering to put money back into the coffers of UK plc, while scottish pensioners are receiving free care. But what makes it even worse is that this policy would have been defeated in the house of commons if scottish MP's were banned from voting on it, like english MP's where for the scottish vote. This is grossly unfair. The tories are pushing this really hard for another reason, at the last election, they actually won more votes in england than labour did.
