RP Posted June 8, 2006 Posted June 8, 2006 An idle chat in the pub last night : If you could somehow give our players who are now in Germany the following choice, which do you think they would choose? Your country comes third on their Group and you return home fit and healthy OR Your country wins the world Cup but in the last few minutes of the Final you pick up a serious injury which means you're not fit to play for your Club for say 6/8/10 months What do you think?
Cobs Posted June 8, 2006 Posted June 8, 2006 I bet Cisse would take it if you offered him it right now.... but yeah a footballer's career is what 12-15 years long? Chances to win the World Cup are few and far between for most. You're offering players the biggest prize in their sport guaranteed but the cost is a maximum of one season of their career - i think they'd take it. i think if you offered them the Premiership title guaranteed they'd probably take it too.
TheLa Posted June 8, 2006 Posted June 8, 2006 I'd rather England done f*ck all under any circumstance.
Benitez Posted June 8, 2006 Posted June 8, 2006 the latter. They win the world cup, and along with winning the CL and league, pinnacle of a career. And pretty good chance they wouldn't get another chance to win the World Cup.
Cobs Posted June 8, 2006 Posted June 8, 2006 I'd rather England done f*ck all under any circumstance.not all our players are English
TheLa Posted June 8, 2006 Posted June 8, 2006 not all our players are English I'd rather no international football full stop. F*cking hate it. But the initial question was would you rather "your country" win the World Cup but a player for your club get injured or something else. I'm from England so I answered accordingly.

TheLa Posted June 8, 2006 Posted June 8, 2006 i think you need to re-read the question Ah.....In that case, they'd rather win the World Cup.....lousy reading letting me down again....
sutty Posted June 8, 2006 Posted June 8, 2006 f*** off England. The world cup isn't the pinnacle. Club football is of a higher standard.
Guest Anders Honoré Posted June 8, 2006 Posted June 8, 2006 (edited) winning the world cup is the pinnacle of any players career. Of course they'd take the latter. Edited June 8, 2006 by Anders Honoré
yellow jumper Posted June 8, 2006 Posted June 8, 2006 judging by what's happened to the rugby team after their victory and the ashes side after theirs, they'll all be f***ed anyway.
Bailo Posted June 8, 2006 Posted June 8, 2006 Depends on the player.I could see Carra going for option a), Stevie for option b). But is that in part motivated by knowing that Carra will never be an England regular, barring a major injury to Terry or Ferdinand?
Gravy Posted June 8, 2006 Posted June 8, 2006 The world cup isn't the pinnacle. It is for a player. Look at how the 66 team are still re vered even now. Every player I believe would take the WC winning option. It's once in a lifetime for them (and us if you want England to win).

It's once in a lifetime for them (and us if you want England to win). Speculation. As was mine. I'd argue that its a lower standard of football than club football and only has this pinnacle of career label attached to it because it's held as infrequently as it is.
Guest Anders Honoré Posted June 8, 2006 Posted June 8, 2006 maybe so, but it is still the most prestigious tournament in the world.
Stevie H Posted June 8, 2006 Posted June 8, 2006 of course it depends on the person. you ask me would i rather, hypothetically, win the league with liverpool or win the world cup with england, i'd take the league every time.
sutty Posted June 8, 2006 Posted June 8, 2006 maybe so, but it is still the most prestigious tournament in the world. Subjective statement. of course it depends on the person. you ask me would i rather, hypothetically, win the league with liverpool or win the world cup with england, i'd take the league every time.Absolutely without doubt, the league for liverpool. I'd take so much more joy from that
Bailo Posted June 8, 2006 Posted June 8, 2006 Absolutely without doubt, the league for liverpool. I'd take so much more joy from thatI honestly don't know a Liverpool fan who wouldn't feel the same way.
Stevie H Posted June 8, 2006 Posted June 8, 2006 I honestly don't know a Liverpool fan who wouldn't feel the same way. cobs?
Knox_Harrington Posted June 8, 2006 Posted June 8, 2006 I honestly don't know a Liverpool fan who wouldn't feel the same way.Ste Gerrard? I know what people mean by this pinnacle of career stuff but I genuinely reckon Gerrard would rather win the league with us than the World Cup with England.
