Gig of 2006

I think I have seen my best gig of the year already - despite it being put on in association with XFM...

I went to the Barfly in Camden last night to see The Pipettes, who I knew very little about apart from having heard one song twice, and knowing they were an all-girl band

First up though were Rumble Strips who were very good - all very indie '84 stylee mixing Wah! / Dexy's / June Brides / Postcard influences. A band I shall keep an eye out for

Then out came 4 (?) blokes all in monogrammed tank tops - huh? Well, they were The Pipettes' backing band, as the three girls who make up The Pipettes then appeared - all in polka dot mini-skirt dresses with matching thick beltsm and hairbands. All very 60s girl group. As were the synchronised hand-clapping and choreographed hand movements and dance steps

The music lived up as well - like an English indie Shirelles - with lots of songs about sex (song titles include Dirty Mind, Your Kisses Are Wasted On Me, It Hurts To See You Dance So Well, One Night Stand and Sex)

And yes, three (at least reasonably) hot chicks, with one for everybody - a blonde, a brunette and one with glasses!

They play London again on 3rd July at Kings College just before their debut album comes out - I think I may pop along to see them again
