Scally the Wag Posted June 7, 2006 Posted June 7, 2006 As you have posted on this topic recently, I thought you might like to field a question. When I was a teenager, Reggae was the music of choice for Skinheads. Trilby hats, Harrington jackets, Crombies, Tonik-weave razor-pressed trousers, red socks, Ben Serman shirts, braces, bleached jeans (straights, not flares), Doc Martens, head shaves... and reggae. Odd combination given the white-supremacist leanings of these gangs. Indeedy, your namesake, Desmond Dekker, was all the rage. Not Bob Marley, I know, but t'was what was known as reggae in them days (late 60s - very early 70s). Any thoughts/explanations? The only thing I can think of is that each counter-culture assumed a colour of music to add to its clothing and this was the only one out there that was available. That and the simple fact that most skinheads were thick as a brick.
