Andy @ Allerton Posted June 6, 2006 Posted June 6, 2006 If the whole infrastructure of the current money structure completely collapsed? If Clubs had to once again cater to the most important people going? The fans..
Stevie H Posted June 6, 2006 Posted June 6, 2006 that kind of football is available to you in parks and on playing fields all over the country every saturday and sunday, andy.
ifanew Posted June 6, 2006 Posted June 6, 2006 Depends how badly it collapsed? If it was an extreme case how, many players, especially the best and richest would stay and carry on playing if they were paid a wage equivalent to the man in the street? Apart from Fowler of course.

Probably the same amount as used to when wages were similar to that of the average working man.
ifanew Posted June 6, 2006 Posted June 6, 2006 Probably the same amount as used to when wages were similar to that of the average working man. I know there would always be someone to take the place of anyone who left the game, but I'm certain that some players would leave the game for more lucrative pastures with a possible detremental effect on the quality of the game.
Andy @ Allerton Posted June 6, 2006 Author Posted June 6, 2006 How many players from todays "Elite" Could take the harder game of the 60s and 70s? How many could take the tackles? How many could take playing on despite niggling injuries? How many could physically head or kick the heavy ball of those days? How many could play far more games than they do now with little rest? Little of the medical knowledge or nutrician knowledge that exists today? How many could do all the above and still dazzle and amaze the crowd? I'd say very very few. But turn it around and give those players from the history of Football the facilities of today and they would all flourish in my opinion. So - who does that make the better footballer?

smithdown Posted June 6, 2006 Posted June 6, 2006 that kind of football is available to you in parks and on playing fields all over the country every saturday and sunday, andy. Simple as that really.

But turn it around and give those players from the history of Football the facilities of today and they would all flourish in my opinion. So - who does that make the better footballer? How many of the "elite" footballers of the past would cope today? Could they cope with the pace of the modern game? Would they have the fitness levels required after 8 pints the night before games? Could the hardman centre halves adjust to not being able to endlessly pass back to the keeper or scyth down any passing striker from behind with little more to fear than the odd yellow card? Would the goalkeepers be as adept at dealing with the flight of the modern lighter balls? I'd say it's impossible to tell how players from one era would adjust to another so who cares? If you want to see unfit "real" men kick each other and lump a ball upfield and pay little or nothing for the pleasure though Andy then (as Stevie said) there are endless amateur and semi pro teams around the nation's parks to keep you amused.
