Why do Hollywood always spoil interesting storylines?

For example, in War of the Worlds - a passable sci-fi yarn, the lad should have copped it and it would have made the film better because there would be a story there - not the gushy - oh! Look! He's ok after all nonsense.

And for another example, in "Man on Fire" (Excellent book - utterly crap film) the young girl that leads to his vengence actually dies in the book - but in the film he finds her alive - which makes the rest of the film a complete joke.

E.T. Should have copped it in E.T. - but he didn't - if he had - would have been a better film.

Any other examples where a decent book or a potentially interesting storyline have been spoiled in this way?
