Huyton_Red Posted June 2, 2006 Posted June 2, 2006 (edited) Been thinking about this over the last few days. We should buy Micheal Owen and be done with it £12 million. Activate the clause and buy him. There is no other sensible option. He is the only proven, world class goal scorer within our price range. We desperately need a bit of class up front. Owen has his critics on here but on blob he is a great little player, we all know that because we all saw him grow up playing for Liverpool. He is a Liverpool lad as well, came up through the ranks, knows the score etc. And above all else, he is a proven, premiership goalscorer. Everyone get a grip, kiss and make up and take the logical step forward and bring owen home, he has been made to suffer enough in that desolate wasteland that is Newcastle Bent, Dafoe, Bellamy etc etc, no thanks, we are competing with Chelsea, Arsenal and Man Utd here lads. Rooney, Henry and Shevchenko. Crouch was a great signing because he is truly unique, Dafoe, bent and bellamy are not unique, they are just pale imitations of Owen, lets be honest. We are at a stage now where we have to move up a level and there is no one available for £12 million in Owens class. We need two strikers, one of them HAS to be Owen. There is no other way. Bring the lad home for f'ck sake and lets be done with it. Edited June 2, 2006 by Huyton_Red
McBain Posted June 2, 2006 Posted June 2, 2006 Me too. But what happens if the mancs offer 12.5? We should only worry if they offer more wages
Huyton_Red Posted June 2, 2006 Author Posted June 2, 2006 He's come home like a shot, we all know that It was not politically possible last summer, we could not spend £17 million on a player we sold for £8 million 12 months earlier. Its different now, he has a clause that has been activated because Newcastle did not qualify for Europe. £12 million Just f'ckin buy him and be done with it

Mick_G Posted June 2, 2006 Posted June 2, 2006 Would have said yes but just seen his ASDA advert , now its a no
Guest Kev Posted June 2, 2006 Posted June 2, 2006 Me too. But what happens if the mancs offer 12.5? Mancs could offer want they want, he's got Carra to answer to don't forget.
Sion Posted June 2, 2006 Posted June 2, 2006 1) I doubt there is a clause, and if there is it's probably european football activated and 2) I don't exactly get the opinion Rafa wants him, no matter how much the board might.
AntM Posted June 2, 2006 Posted June 2, 2006 Not for me. He rarely manages to complete a full season nowadays.
mick Posted June 2, 2006 Posted June 2, 2006 Newcastle pay 16mil (??)l and let him have a clause to leave for 12. Personally I'd have no problem taking Mikey back. I'm sure 25 Premier league goals a season would help ease the anger some fans would feel.
Falconhoof Posted June 2, 2006 Posted June 2, 2006 Me too. But what happens if the mancs offer 12.5? If £12 million activates this supposed clause in his contract then Newcastle are obliged to sell him to us at that price. If the clause exists he's much better value than Defoe or Bent. 1) I doubt there is a clause, and if there is it's probably european football activated You think being in the Intertoto cup with the slim chance of scraping into the UEFA cup is going to qualify as 'European football' ? I'm not convinced there's a clause either but anything about European football would be about Champions League and not UEFA cup.
diggy Posted June 2, 2006 Posted June 2, 2006 Injury prone The red jersey has great healing powers for returning strikers. Fowler was injury prone at Leeds and Man city but since he came back, not a headache. Bring the lad home. Because he's worth it.
Ed the Wool Posted June 2, 2006 Posted June 2, 2006 Rate him as a player don't get me wrong. He'd have to beg us and take a wage cut. Which he won't. He's wasted up there for another year I think. I have very little sympathy. He'll have missed out on a league title as well as a European cup medal next season.
Bigal Posted June 2, 2006 Posted June 2, 2006 I thought the answer was going to be a double swoop for michael chopra and shola ameobi
Owen1978 Posted June 2, 2006 Posted June 2, 2006 I'm sure 25 Premier league goals a season would help ease the anger some fans would feel. I dont think he's ever scored 25 prem goals?

They only have to beat 2 dodgy teams in the intertoto to qualify for the UEFA cup qualifying rounds, would that not count as European football
5InIstanbul Posted June 2, 2006 Posted June 2, 2006 He's never managed 20. Would still have him back though in a flash. I'm told it is becoming more and more difficult; a couple of months or so back it was looking positive. Don't know what has changed, can only guess really.
Armin_Tamzarian Posted June 2, 2006 Posted June 2, 2006 Even accepting the escape clause I don't think we can afford it. He's on 100k+ a week. We can't pay him that, it would be the same as Gerrard who has shown more loyalty. He'd have to agree to substantially less. Plus he needs a strong partner along side him so we'd still need a Crouch like sub/reserve I'd rather we went to the bank and secured a loan based on the next 3 years tv money and got the one striker Benitez really wanted, David Villa. Hell, the team is so close now I'd sooner see some of the transfer funds for the next couple of years diverted into giving this team the best chance possible. We won't have this coach forever, some of the players are peaking now. lets go for it, but by giving the manager what he wants.
kop205 Posted June 2, 2006 Posted June 2, 2006 Newcastle pay 16mil (??)l and let him have a clause to leave for 12. Personally I'd have no problem taking Mikey back. I'm sure 25 Premier league goals a season would help ease the anger some fans would feel. He has never scored 25 league goals in one season, and I don't think the opposition that people have to the move is based on 'anger' at Owen because of the fact that/manner in which he left. It is probably based more on Rafa's fairly ambiguous attitude to him, and the fact that he has played very little football in the last two years. As well as being a guarantee of goals would be a guarantee of an inury - it isn't just since he left that he has had problems. We already have one striker who is likely to need resting for a greater than normal amount of games, so the people we bring in need to be ready to play 40 - 50 games. I'm not particularly against signing Owen (though I wouldn't think of it as 'bringing him home', as some seem to call it) and can see arguments for and against. I just donlt think it is the 'no-brainer' that some seem to think.
