They have also spend more in the past two seasons than we have in our entire history...

although transfer fees have become huge of late

Posted

so effectively, their top 10 buys cost more than we've spent in 50 years?

Nah not 100% but close.... ALL their buys in the Abramovich era has cost Chelsea more, than all our buys since Shankly took over...

I said when Abramovich took over that we would just have to grin and bear it for a few years whilst they win a lot of trophies - sit tight waiting for it all to go t*** up when Interpol catch up with him.

It is a bit depressing at times, knowing that there is simply no way we can compete for players who would make a massive difference to us (like Shevchenko) but as Rimbeuax points out, 5 - 0 is some consolation!

That, and the fact that we've got Rafa who might just be able to bridge the gap anyway if we have a good season transfer activity.

In a strange way there is something exciting (and 'real') about having to wheel and deal a bit rather than just going out and writing another huge cheque. Even if we could do that I'd probably just worry (as I'm sure all Chelsea fans must do deep down) about what will happen if/when the money-man goes.

All Kenyon's talk about 'sustainability' is b******s.

The initial outlay is not really the important bit.

The Chavs have committed over £60m this summer just to pay wages to Ballack and Shevchenko over the lengths of their contracts. Never mind the Lampards, Terrys, Crespos, Essiens, SWPs who are alread on similar wages, some of whom will be getting automatic pay rises to keep them at parity with the highest paid players.

I reckon in total this summer, with wages and transfer fee's, they have already spent, or committed to spend over £120m and that's without including any deal for Hilarity the keeper.

And they are also meant to be getting Roberto Carlos and Ashley Cole (most likely two more on £130k p/w and about another £30m in fees.)

It could reach a quarter of a billion pounds this summer alone.

I reckon if Mourinho somehow manages to forge a title winning side on such a shoestring, he will truly deserve some kind of managerial award.

It'll be interesting if the UEFA wage cap rules do come in. If they are limited to a percentage of turnover (which was mooted) then they'll be stuffed...

It will be more interesting if/when something happens to the pimp and the chavs have to honour those contracts. People who are there for the money aren't going to leave for a huge pay cut just to save the chavs.

I can't wait for that day.

Do you think clubs like Chelsea would adhere to a wage cap?

This is the club who got away with doubling the bonus for reaching the CL semi contrary to the original agreement.

Payments would just go under the table.

won't matter a jot. they'll pay ten grand a week wages and then give appearance bonuses of a hundred grand a week.

Why is everyone so convinced that Abramovich will be gone in a few years ? He has a vast fortune and at the moment there isn't a sniff of an investigation into his dealings.

If they do I want shares in any company that makes brown paper bags.

Apart from hating them with a passion, does anyone *really* care how rich Chelsea are?

Do you think Chavski's fans feel better about their two plastic league titles than we did about Istanbul?

No, because with virtually infinite wealth you are expected to win everything, whereas we are being run like a normal football club, which means we *hope* to win everything, but start from about the same point as all the other clubs in the league, bar the Russian's.

Where is the *achievement* in what the Chavs win? We have been in two of the best finals ever since Chelsea got their sugar-daddy, moreso because of the adversity we've faced in reaching them, and during them.

Sure, we'd like to have more cash to buy some of 'missing pieces' for our squad, but it's overcoming a challenge that makes football enjoyable. Chelsea have no challenge, only expectation. They are the sad kid who gets cheat codes for their video games. They are competitive dad, acting out victories against his kids. They are pathetic.

It makes you wonder if we really have a chance against such massive spendage power!

I know people would point out rafa beat barca & madrid - twice to the title, but even madrid in their heyday didnt have such wealth.

Chelsea will squash most of the prem teams easilly next season, it will be down to us & the usual suspects to actually take points off them.

I can see them getting 90+ pts next season again.

It's entirely irrelevant. Had they paid proper prices for the likes of Carvalho, Duff, SWP, Essien and Drogba in particular would it make their spending less  ?

Makelele, Shevchenko and Ballack are the only players they acquired who are real fantasy football sorts and two of them haven't played yet. The others are decent pros they overpaid for. What they spent makes not one iota of difference.

Had they paid proper prices and wages for Duff, SWP and Essien, they would have gone to Man U, Liverpool and Man U respectively. Drogba is nothing special so who cares, but I doubt they would have got Carvalho either. Same with Crespo.

The whole point with the chavs is they overspend precisely because it's the only way they can attract most of their players. I don't know how you can dissmiss it as irrelevant. The vast amount of money they spend removes the skill of management. We are still feeling the effects of spending £20m 4 years ago on three players that failed, it is limiting what Rafa can do and he is adjusting his plans accordingly. They don't have that problem or that fear. If Shevchenko fails to adjust to the premiership, they can farm him somewhere else paying half his wages and not bat an eyelid, like they did with Crespo.

They can also buy players purely to stop other teams from getting them, do they need Ballack? Will he improve them? No, but he would have improved man u. Same for SWP.

The amount of money the chavs spend is the ONLY thing that is important about them.

The amounts don't matter, why do we obsess??

Because were as us, the Mancs, Arsenal etc have paid for players from cash generated by the club and sort of lived within their means.

It's the fact that the Siberian came in, looking for an insurance policy, and picking a club, that was days, if not hours, from going to the wall, due too the previous incumbent, trying to live way beyond their means. Then having all this "big club" shyte shoved down our throats, by the press, who are infatuated and hang on every word by that jumped up Translator.

They also employ as their Chief Exec. A life long Manc, who was, and still is a slimy cvnt.

Chelsea are like that Lottery winner, Chav king Mikey Carrol.

They massively overpay for players. So what??

It isn't so much that they overpay for individual players and outbid everyone else, but that they operate with no transfer budget constraints, so if a signing doesn't work out they just go and buy someone else.

That is what is worrying because it means that regardless of the skill of the manager, the odds are they get it right eventually.

Houllier won trophies for Liverpool and in many ways was a fine manager, vastly superior to Mourihno, yet is almost reviled by some people now because his dealings in his last few years at the club are still hampering us now - having paid 14m for Cisse, we can't just shrug our shoulders and say 'Oh well, he's s***, lets spend 20m on someone else'. That is precisely what they can do and it means the stakes are much higher for us when we bring people in. If Xabi and Momo hadn't worked out, for example, we'd be well up s*** creek because it would mean another part of the team is in need of urgent strengthening. Thank God we have Rafa, and his buys have generally been excellent so far, but there is a pressure facing us that simply isn't there for Chelsea.

Their spending is relevant because it is like being able to buy 100 lottery tickets whilst we can only buy 1.

Having said that, I am always reminding myself that we can't concern ourselves with what they do and should just concentrate on us, because I still believe that (short term at least), if we get the next set of buys right, we ARE in a position to compete on the pitch. The harder part is sustaining that long term in the face of such relentless spending.
