Vlad still regularly watches the final over and over again in France. He loved LFC and speaks so highly of everything about the club. He is a top fella

Would be nice to see him back at the club in some compacity in the future.

Capacity even? ;)

 I had just woken up. Well thats my excuse ;)

Remember his last minute volley against Chelsea? That was a great goal. Houllier left him on the bench next game (loved the way he used to do that), but we got an early injury and Vlad came on and scored straight away with a header. I was thinking 'this is it, Vlad's going to become one of our best players'. Then he go injured again.

I always rated Vlad but it was difficult to see where he would fit into a rigid 442 formation. Maybe he would have been better in the 4231 we sometimes play now. He always worked well with Paddy. In fact we could have had Berger, Smicer and Rosicky as the three in a three-pronged Czech attack! i feel a formation thread coming on!

Gotta love Vladi.

I dont think I've ever wanted a plyer to succeed as much as him and I liked the man even after it became apparent it was never going to really 'happen' for him here. I dont think he ever cheated anyone.

I said after the final last year though, after all the struggles he had while he was here, he left the Club a true legend after Istanbul.

How would you have fitted VdV into that one?

And to kiss the badge the way he did in Istanbul when he knew at that stage that he was definitely leaving.

Class act.

That's what still impresses me - he'd been told months earlier he would be released - Benitez played it straight with him 'You're a fine player, but I can't rely on your fitness and neither can you' and yet he still kissed the badge in a genuine passion without affectation. I wish we could have had a couple of genuinely fully fit years out of him under Benitez.

After meeting with team doctors today, Vladimir Smicer has decided that

he won't be fit in time for the World Cup and says he won't travel to

Germany. His replacement will almost certainly be Libor Sionko though

for the time being no official change will be made to the Czech squad.

"I sat down with the doctors this morning and reached this decision,"

the 33-year-old told reporters. "I can't allow the tension for the

coach, my team-mates or myself to continue. It's 10 days until the first

game and I can't even train."

Smicer informed his team-mates of his decision during lunch. The

Bordeaux midfielder described the moment as the saddest of his career.

"It was terrible after we lost to Greece in the European Championship,

but crying in front of anyone over football, that's never happened to me

before," he said.

Had a bet with my wife during THE final. If Vlad scored then we'd name our first boy after him, if and when we have one.

I thought he was a great footballer. As someone mentioned, his injuries prevented him from being a true Liverpool great.

Loved his goal, loved the moment. Will always remember it. It was just what he deserved.

So lets get this straight...

She must be happy to call potentially impending small boy Vladimir to go along with the bet, which implies you don't want to call aforementioned small boy Vladimir, hence the bet...

Am I close or in Albuquerque?

Pretty close :D

My wife has always loved him in a Hels Smicer kinda way.

I've always liked him as a footballer.

We were three nil down so I was willing to accept anything if it would somehow mean we were going to score a goal, maybe even 3 goals.

Neither of us have ever been able to come up with a reason ever since for why the impending fella should not be called Vladimir.

I'm not sure if I've ever willed anyone to do anything as much as I wanted him to slot that pen in The Final, for the lad himself as much as for what it meant to the scoreline.

Whats yer surname and does that have any prepurcusions Knock on effects?.

Feel really sorry for him that he's out the World Cup, as soon as he re-injured his leg though it always seemed like it was coming.. Poor b*****d, he has absolutely no luck with injuries (and weddings ;) ) - So good that the European Cup Final was perfect for him.

Wouldn't mind seeing him back at the club either really, he seems like an intelligent lad who could be a good coach or something.

Fair enough...

Didn't Rafa offer him a loan deal elsewhere but Vlad asked if he might be needed ? Rafa said yes so he stayed.

While it's true that Smicer never consistently showed his full potential at Liverpool it's a bit dissapointing for supporters to suggest that the goal in the CL final was the only thing of note that he ever did in our shirt.

Often in games when we were struggling to break down the opposition he was the one to provide the spark or the killer pass. He was never much good at tackling and got injured much too often (not his fault) but he always put in the effort. I always thought he should have scored more goals for us as well - maybe if he had been played just behind the striker we would have seen a more consistent level of performance from him. Lots of other players were inconsistent as well but never got slagged off as much.

I think he deserves a bit more credit than what he is given.
