Toffees unveil Johnson

By Graeme Bailey - Created on 31 May 2006

Everton's new club record signing Andy Johnson was delighted after being unveiled at Goodison Park.

Johnson was excused England duty - where he is on stand-by with the World Cup party - to finalise his £8.6 million move to Merseyside.

"I am absolutely delighted as Everton is one of the biggest clubs in British football and to play in front of 40,000 every week is a big decision," Johnson told Sky Sports News.

"We [Johnson and Moyes] had a good chat and he told me about how the club was going forward.

"Money in football these days is massive and I can't wait to get the jersey on, obviously it will help my England chances and hopefully I can start scoring week in, week out."

Johnson is confident he can soon replicate the form he showed in The Premiership with former club Crystal Palace two seasons ago.

"It is not going to be as difficult," he insisted, "I am playing with better players and that will help.

"My ambition is to keep on scoring as I have done over the last three or four years and I want to win things, I have come to a massive club.

"I want to get back into the England team and hopefully I can score week in, week out."

Johnson was also quick to pay tribute to his former club Palace.

"I want to say thanks to everyone at Crystal Palace," he said.

"Iain Dowie was great and the chairman was excellent - obviously they have problems off the field but that is nothing to do with me now."

Manager David Moyes was more than happy with his new purchase.

"It is a big signing for us and shows the ambition here," he said.

"It is great that the board of directors went and got the money, all I heard was that Andy wanted to come and when I heard that I pushed the board to bring him here.

"His goals will be the big thing [he brings], his record over the last two or three years is nearly one in two which is fantastic - he has got pace and ability to hurt people and get in behind them. He fitted all the criteria for a player we wanted, he is young and dare I say he is British."

Moyes played down the size of the fee, insisting it was not as big a deal as some people are making out.

"£8.5 or £8.6 million - Wigan and Bolton offered that, so the fee might not be as big these days and the new [TV] deal the clubs have been given means you will see more big transfers and I hope you will see more at Everton," he added.

"He had a hard choice, Bolton and Wigan have done very well - I am just very pleased he has chosen Everton."

Moyes also suggested Everton could be ready to unveil another new signing in the near future - with the likes of Robert Huth and Joleon Lescott strongly linked.

"We have always tried to make progress, and hopefully there will be some more new players to talk about," he said.

And so it goes; Text 1 (from Blue family member) "Beattie and Johnson will score 20 each next season".

Text 2 (from older Blue family memeber who should know better - especially texting at his age!); "Johnson joined us because of our fans, our loyalty and knowing the type of football we play. Get in!"

And saying that shows how small time you are Moyes.

Johnson reveals England ambitions

Johnson is on standby for England

Everton's £8.6m signing Andrew Johnson hopes his chances of playing for England will improve as a result of his decision to join the Merseyside club.

The 25-year-old striker was unveiled at at Goodison Park on Wednesday following his move from Crystal Palace.

"I'm delighted to have joined one of the biggest clubs in British football," said the 25-year-old.

"I'm playing for team who played in the Champions League. Playing for them will help my England chances

Injury permitting they'll get over thirty in the league between them.

Since they can't both be taking penalties, better make that 20 goals tops.

Knox, I usually can see what you are thinking or your view point but this is madness, man, madness, I tell you.

Beattie is never fit, slow and his best days are behind him - biggest man breasts in football; Johnson, I know you like him, but 1 season at the top level and a lot of potential, but that is all. Everton have spent the majority of their budget, have little to no pace or creativity in their midfield and an ageing defence, they'll need any goals Johnson scores to keep them mid-table. Beattie will not score more than 8, Johson, if he takes the pens, 12-15.

Everton will be in a relegation dogfight yet again, they cant play 442 - it leaves them wide open! They seemed to improve in the second half of the season due to playing BT upfront by himself!

i don't think he's anywhere near getting the sack tbh.

He's spending a lot of money this summer. If they get off to a bad start, it's not out of the question. Also for some reason I reckon it'll be a merseyside derby at Anfield first game of the season.

Does that include the reserve league, where Baros was so prolific ;)

you didn't mention the magic 8-ball, therefore your words are empty.

You want me to go grab my magic ball, shake it vigorously and see what comes out? Fine, stand back.

I made the mistake of thinking he was odds on for the sack half way through last season - they then went and made a "miraculous" recovery...

For the forthcoming season I shall keep my mouth shut (regarding the bluenoses)

"To early to predict" apparently. Ah behold the mysteries of space and time.

who? Everton?

Quality!

'Injuries permitting' was quite a big rider really, wasn't it?

Incidentally, what is all the s**** about Big Dunc in the Echo this week, and how he was the scoure of Liverpool? How many derby goals did he actually score?

I can think of 2 - the header in Fat Joe's first game when fair enough, we did struggle with him, and one in the Gary Mac derby at their s*** hole in 2001. Were there many others? Many match winning performances?

A player of his quality and proven ability deserves to be playing at one of the "Biggest Clubs" in England. With a vast array of Champions League experience behind them Everton are clearly a team going places.

decent signing for them...sure he`ll score a bucketload of goals then will be sold to one of the big boys next summer.

Who? Liverpool, Mancs, Newcastle and maybe even Arsenal all need strikers this season and are in the market. I think Johnson was waiting for one of those clubs but only got Wigan, Bolton and the blues****. Foor fella.

Decent signing though and the price will become irellevent if he does well for them.

Beattie will not score more than 8, Johson, if he takes the pens, 12-15.

They'll link up well, it's a classic front man partnership, Beattie while he could do with shedding more weight isn't a bad player and Johnson is a goalscorer. Beattie got ten in 29 starts this season (which is more than any of our forwards managed in the league to be fair) and Johnson got 21 for a Palace side in this division that was significantly poorer than Everton as well. He has pace - the thing which crap defences fear more than anything too. To call him potential when he scored at a better rate over the last three seasons than anyone else in all divisions bar Nistlerooy and Henry is a little unfair.

The bigger worry for them is whether or not they can play 442 because Cahill definitely can't be part of a centre mid pair. Arteta is a class act though and Osman isn't a bad player by any stretch of the imagination. Wouldn't be surprised to see Cahill go meaning they'll have a little more money to spend (and they look to have enough to sign Huth).

I don't think they'll be nailed on for a top half finish because I think they will struggle going backwards. But they have, for a mid table side, a very exciting front two and better than what's on offer at, say, Wigan, Bolton and Fulham and as good as West Ham. Also Blackburn and Newcastle could both lose their best striker.

The injuries thing may be a reasonably big rider though.

No they didn't Johnson, you k****ead. They played in the qualifiers for the champions league. And got knocked out.

even if they had played in the champions league its still a pretty pathetic thing to say. proud to plsy for a team who once played in the CL? Why didnt you go to Forest, they won the f***ing thing twice!

Don't see that, unfortunately. They'll be comfortably in the top half fighting for European places this season.
