Montse Posted May 30, 2006 Posted May 30, 2006 Just found this class highlights of the game between us and Man U from the 90's, Barnes and Beardsley were unstoppable! In the first half Barnes was getting booed everytime he touched the ball, indicative I guess of the time, but he soon silenced them by setting up 2 and scoring one and making many a chance Enjoy, thanks to Merseybeat for this
Huyton_Red Posted May 30, 2006 Posted May 30, 2006 Brilliant - I was at this game and remeber it well
Flasher Posted May 30, 2006 Posted May 30, 2006 Man we were good. Couple of things I notice/remembered watching that. Our passing was quick, very quick. Players were very alert and prepared to attack from anywhere. Steve McMahon was underated. Kop swaying after the Burrows shot (those were the days) Barnes was a genius.
Lee W Posted May 30, 2006 Posted May 30, 2006 That pass from Digger for the 2nd is right up there with Dalglish's to Rushie in the Watford home game (there's obviously more). The Manc's were still singing "Man U" (clap, clap) back then too. In their pomp, Barnes and Beardsley made football look so easy.
R A Softlad Posted May 30, 2006 Posted May 30, 2006 McMahon was immense in that game. They could boo Barnes as much as they wanted he made them look like fools and all at his own pace. Class.
HeWonItFromBrock Posted May 30, 2006 Posted May 30, 2006 That's the team that Souness thought was past it just 10 onths later. Criminal.
anny road Posted May 30, 2006 Posted May 30, 2006 they were the better side for long parts of that game despite the scoreline we didnt play that well
Swipe Posted May 30, 2006 Posted May 30, 2006 Always thought it weird the way Beardsley never gets assosiated with us any more. He's thought of as a Newcastle man rather than a Liverpool one - despite the fact he has most success with us. Do people not remember him with much affection? Or is it from Beardsley himself? It seems he thinks of Newcastle United as "us" and not Liverpool. Was very young at that time, but always loved watching him. If he was around today (and foreign) he'd be worth a bundle..
AntM Posted May 30, 2006 Posted May 30, 2006 Is that kid at the end of the clip giving it the Vs? haha.

Swipe Posted May 30, 2006 Posted May 30, 2006 Makes me cringe listening to Barnes getting booed. My first football/Liverpool here. What a player!
anny road Posted May 30, 2006 Posted May 30, 2006 Makes me cringe listening to Barnes getting booed. My first football/Liverpool here. What a player! can remember him getting alot of stick from a few of ours at Arsenal away 1st game.....and again at Coventry but they soon shut up after that game, and his home debut v Oxford
sutty Posted May 30, 2006 Posted May 30, 2006 can remember him getting alot of stick from a few of ours at Arsenal away 1st game.....and again at Coventry but they soon shut up after that game, and his home debut v Oxford My dad was at the coventry game. That was the season that the 1st 4 games were away from home because the ground was being built. He came back and said "Just wait until you see this team." He was not wrong.

anny road Posted May 30, 2006 Posted May 30, 2006 I'm probably being naive, but that's staggering to think. lots of "Liverpool are white" and "get the n****r out the team" songs at Arsenal esp in the pub before
sutty Posted May 30, 2006 Posted May 30, 2006 lots of "Liverpool are white" and "get the n****r out the team" songs at Arsenal esp in the pub before How times have changed eh?
Munching Gladbach Posted May 30, 2006 Posted May 30, 2006 I know it's only highlights, and Man U had their share of the ball, but when we are attacking it looks so easy, almost like a training match. Oh, and the combination of Barnes and Beardsley (with Rushie to feed off the scraps) was at times totally unplayable that season. Makes me think how much we could improve on the current attack, to be honest.
Swipe Posted May 30, 2006 Posted May 30, 2006 lots of "Liverpool are white" and "get the n****r out the team" songs at Arsenal esp in the pub before Really? Wow. That's mad. As you said in your initial post - indicative of the times. Thought its scary to think there are probably still some out there who think like that.

Arsenal away (funnily enough) this seasonw as bad "Get the paki's pff the Kop" etc
intense enigma Posted May 30, 2006 Posted May 30, 2006 that game gets lost as the QPR game is not long after I remember that game....especially Barnes' brilliant individual goal.....the look on Seaman's face was priceless....almost like he was going to burst into tears
